Searchability® is working with a Swiss engineering firm in Fribourg/Vaud seeking a Senior Firmware Engineer to own embedded software architecture across prototyping and industrialisation projects. You will lead technical discussions, guide junior engineers and ensure robust firmware on Cortex-M MCUs with bare metal and RTOS.

Fluent French and English are required to engage with customers and internal teams; you will operate onsite in a dynamic small-team environment delivering multiple projects

ABOUT THE CLIENT

An established Swiss engineering firm specialising in electronic, software and IoT development as a service.

They design and build products to client specification across medical, industrial, building automation, appliances and consumer. A small, senior team with a long track record of delivered R&D projects, working with startups and large corporates alike.

Projects run the full cycle, from concept and rapid prototyping through to industrialisation and small series manufacturing. Engineering works in mixed project teams, combining hardware, firmware, software and mechanical skills on every build.

THE ROLE

You will join one of the development teams as the senior firmware engineer, owning architecture definition, development, testing and maintenance of embedded software across prototyping and industrialisation projects.

You will act as the technical reference for embedded software inside the business, and talk directly to customers in French and English, taking their request and turning it into technical scope.

This is a technical leadership role, not a project management one. They have dedicated project managers in house. You will guide junior engineers technically, review their work and help them grow, rather than line manage them.

WHO THIS SUITS

What matters most here is the last three to five years, and whether you have genuinely built product yourself, hands on, down to the awkward details.

If you have defined the architecture, written the firmware and debugged it yourself on real shipped products, they want to talk to you. Total years on the CV matters far less than that.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

• Defining, designing and reviewing system architecture across hardware, firmware and software
• Implementing firmware on bare metal and RTOS in C and C++
• Running software verification and validation testing to ensure quality and reliability
• Acting as the technical reference for embedded software within the business
• Leading technical and commercial discussions with customers
• Providing technical leadership and guidance to junior engineers
• Keeping current with emerging trends and technologies in embedded development

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

• Strong C and C++ on embedded targets, bare metal and RTOS
• Solid understanding of Cortex-M microcontroller architectures
• Hands on experience with IoT systems
• Evidence of defining firmware or system architecture, not only implementing someone else's spec
• Recent hands on product development in a small team environment
• Ability to read and understand electronic schematics
• Git and JIRA
• Fluent written and spoken French and English
• MSc or BSc in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Microengineering or similar
• A valid Swiss work permit, as sponsorship is not available for this role

NICE TO HAVE, NOT ESSENTIAL

• Embedded Linux, device trees and ARM applications processors (most projects here are microcontroller oriented, so this is a plus rather than a prerequisite)
• Python
• Experience taking a prototype through certification and into production
• Regulated or safety critical product experience across medical, automotive or industrial
• Mentoring or coaching junior engineers
