Jobbeschreibung

At Roche you can show up as yourself, embraced for the unique qualities you bring. Our culture encourages personal expression, open dialogue, and genuine connections, where you are valued, accepted and respected for who you are, allowing you to thrive both personally and professionally.

In Roche’s Pharmaceutical Research and Early Development (pRED) organisation, this role is located in Pathology and Applied Safety Science, a department within the Pharmaceutical Sciences function. The position focuses on the non‑clinical safety assessment of drug candidates during discovery and development phases.

Opportunity

As an engaged Digital Pathologist, you will play a pivotal role in the development, validation and implementation of pathology investigations and the application of computational pathology approaches for translational safety assessment. You will propose, conduct and report computational toxicologic pathology approaches to understand mechanisms of toxicity, leveraging modern tools to maximise scientific insights and advance our therapeutic pipeline. You will support the automation of pathology algorithms, workflows and platforms, remaining accountable for the scientific delivery of pathology data used in risk assessment across projects ranging from small molecules to complex biological products.

Responsibilities
  • Provide expert pathology support in preclinical development, aligning toxicity study designs with current science and regulatory guidelines; conduct qualitative and quantitative histopathologic evaluations for discovery and development studies, including GLP‑compliant studies.
  • Peer‑review histopathologic data and interpretations from internal or CRO pathologists per established SOPs and integrate clinical pathology data (haematology, clinical chemistry) with histopathology findings for a holistic, mechanistic interpretation of toxicity.
  • Author pathology sections for research reports, regulatory filings (e.g., IND/CTA) and governance presentations, delivering clear and concise interpretations.
  • Propose, build, test and implement custom image analysis solutions and algorithms to automate cell and biomarker quantification on scanned tissue; oversee integration of machine‑learning and non‑machine‑learning software to detect, segment and score tissue morphologies.
  • Extract high‑dimensional spatial features and quantitative metrics from multiplexed or standard IHC and ISH slides and transform complex tissue images into structured data arrays to uncover subtle or sub‑visual drug‑induced tissue alterations.
  • Develop, upgrade or customise end‑to‑end Python scripts, processing pipelines, automated data visualisation tools and digital pathology dashboards; collaborate with data engineering and software development teams to maintain and deploy code using standard practices.
  • Ensure digital pathology and image analysis solutions comply with relevant validation guidelines, support the evolution of SOPs, and promote an external scientific presence through participation in consortia, congresses and peer‑reviewed publications.
  • Serve as a matrix lead and collaborative partner within multidisciplinary teams, optimising digital imaging workflows, data‑flow infrastructure and sample turnaround to improve pipeline efficiency.
  • Mentor, train and coach technicians, PhD students and postdocs entering the computational pathology domain, aligning resource allocation and algorithm development with strategic portfolio priorities.
Qualifications
  • Degree in Veterinary Medicine (DVM or equivalent) and board‑certified veterinary pathologist (ECVP or ACVP); a PhD in pathology, veterinary pathology or a closely related field is preferred.
  • Practical experience in toxicologic pathology and histopathologic evaluations.
  • Proven experience developing custom image‑analysis algorithms, working with machine‑learning software and deploying end‑to‑end Python scripts or processing pipelines.
  • Solid understanding of tissue‑based assays such as immunohistochemistry (IHC) and clinical pathology data integration for mechanistic toxicity interpretation.
  • Strong communication and relationship‑building skills, adept at navigating multidisciplinary team environments.
  • Experience within GLP‑compliant or validated frameworks and the ability to optimise data flows to align with broader portfolio priorities.
