International Organization for Migration (IOM) seeks a Consultant for Missing Migrants Assessment in Mauritania. You will design and implement a comprehensive institutional assessment, identify gaps, and propose capacity-building actions.
Travel to Nouakchott/Nouadhibou will be required, with collaboration from an IOM technical expert on information management systems and a national focal-point framework. The role requires fluency in English and French, with Arabic desirable.
Introduction
Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations and the leading UN agency in the field of migration. Working closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners, IOM promotes humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It saves lives and protects people on the move, drives solutions to displacement, and facilitates pathways for regular migration, while providing services and advice to governments and migrants.
IOM is committed to fostering a respectful, inclusive and supportive workplace where all employees can thrive professionally and feel valued. By creating such an environment, IOM aims to better harness the full potential of migration and strengthen its support to people on the move.
The Consultant- Missing Migrants Assessment: Mauritania will develop a Missing Migrant Assessment for Mauritania that will provide the government and its partners with a comprehensive overview of the institutional architecture and operational procedures related to the clarification of the fate and whereabouts of missing migrants, as well as identify challenges and gaps that can be addressed through capacity-building initiatives.
This assessment is part of the project “Capacity Building of Missing Migrant National Focal Points in Rabat Process Partner Countries, Phase 1 (Mauritania and The Gambia)”, funded by the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The project aims to strengthen the capacities of government-designated missing migrants national focal points (NFPs) and other key government officials in Mauritania and The Gambia, promoting a whole-of-government and whole-of-society response to missing migrants.
This will be the first time that IOM undertakes a comprehensive institutional assessment of a national response to missing migrants from the perspective of a country where migrant deaths and disappearances occur. The assessment will be conducted in parallel with an assessment in The Gambia, which examines the issue from the perspective of a country of origin whose nationals die or go missing along migration routes outside its territory.
