Zusammenfassung

CERN invites an applied physicist to contribute to the development of SpaCal technology within the Experimental Physics Department. You will participate in R&D, test-beam characterisation, and studies to optimise photon detectors for fast timing.

You will document results in scientific publications. The role is based at CERN in Switzerland; eligibility requires a master’s degree with experience or a PhD, and you must be a national of CERN Member or Associate Member State.

Qualifikationen

  • Master’s degree with 2–6 years experience since graduation or a PhD with max 3 years experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree alone does not qualify.
  • National of CERN Member State or Associate Member State; Pakistani and Lithuanian nationals excluded for 2026 start.

Aufgaben

  • Actively participate in ongoing R&D efforts to develop and optimise SpaCal technology for the LHCb PicoCal and other applications.
  • Take part in test-beam and laboratory characterisation of SpaCal prototype modules to optimise time resolution.
  • Contribute to studies aimed at optimiser photon detectors for SpaCal technology.
  • Characterise novel radiation-hard, fast crystal scintillating fibres and organic scintillating materials.
  • Document the results in scientific publications.

Ausbildung

Master’s degree + 2–6 years experience
PhD + ≤3 years experience

Jobbeschreibung

As an applied physicist, you will contribute to the development of radiation-hard Spaghetti Calorimeter (SpaCal) technology with dense absorbers to achieve picosecond-level time resolutions. This work is part of the strategic detector R&D programme within the Experimental Physics (EP) Department at CERN.

Your responsibilities
  • Actively participate in ongoing R&D efforts to develop and optimise Spaghetti Calorimeter (SpaCal) technology for the LHCb PicoCal and other applications.
  • Take part in the test-beam and laboratory characterisation of SpaCal prototype modules, with the aim of optimising the time resolution.
  • Contribute to studies aimed at optimising photon detectors for SpaCal technology.
  • Characterise novel radiation-hard, fast crystal scintillating fibres and organic scintillating materials.
  • Document the results in scientific publications.
Be sure to meet the eligibility criteria
  • You are a national of aCERN Member State or Associate Member State . Currently, we cannot consider applications from Pakistani and Lithuanian nationals for positions with a 2026 start date, as the ceiling defined under Article II.5 of the Associate Membership Agreement has been reached.
  • By the application deadline, you have a master’s degree with 2 to 6 years of professional experience since graduation or a PhD with a maximum of 3 years of professional experience since graduation. You are not eligible with only a bachelor’s degree.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
  • Please pay attention to the additional criteria and requirements for this specific position and mentioned above.
