Organizational context: This position is within the Debt and Development Finance Branch of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva. The Associate Economic Affairs Officer reports directly to the Head of Branch, contributing to the division's work on globalisation and development strategies.

Job purpose: The Associate Economic Affairs Officer will conduct economic and sector analysis, focusing on debt and development finance. This involves collecting, evaluating, and analyzing socio-economic data, maintaining databases, and preparing analytical studies and reports. The role supports intergovernmental processes by contributing to reports and organizing meetings. Additionally, the position assists in technical cooperation by compiling data for project proposals, preparing documentation, and supporting project implementation. The officer will also perform general administrative tasks and engage in professional development through training.

Responsibilities: Key responsibilities include conducting economic and sector analysis by collecting, evaluating, and interpreting socio-economic data related to debt and development finance. This involves maintaining databases and preparing analytical studies, briefing notes, and reports for non-specialists. The role also entails supporting intergovernmental bodies through report preparation and assisting in the organization of relevant meetings and events. Education: An advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in economics or a related field is required. A first-level university degree with two years of relevant qualifying experience may be accepted as an alternative.

Work experience: A minimum of two years of progressive experience in economic research, analysis, policy formulation, or development program application is required. Specific experience in sovereign debt law is also mandatory. Experience in organizing meetings and events is considered desirable.

Skills: Professionalism, strong analytical and research capabilities, effective communication (written and verbal), and teamwork are essential. Proficiency in economic theories and data analysis is required.
