Job summary

A local municipal government is looking for a Zoning Inspector I to join its Building Services Division. This role focuses on ensuring compliance with property use regulations and providing excellent customer service. The successful candidate will undertake inspections, enforce zoning bylaws, and prepare necessary correspondence. Ideal candidates should have a diploma in Law and Security and relevant experience. This is a temporary position with a pay rate ranging from $39.04 to $47.98 per hour, with a work schedule of 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

Position Overview

Resumes are being accepted for the temporary position of Zoning Inspector I with the Building Services Division. The successful candidate will focus on quality customer service and continuous improvement. Reporting to the Program Manager, Zoning, this position will be guided by the goals and objectives of the City of Guelph’s Strategic Plan and committed to the Corporate Values of integrity, excellence and wellness. The successful candidate will aid in the achievement of the Community Vision – to be the city that makes a difference.

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Perform proactive enforcement of all matters related to shared-rental housing.
  • Perform on-site inspections of properties to determine compliance with property use and regulations as it pertains to the Zoning By-law and the Two-Unit House Registration By-law and Sign By-law.
  • Prepare correspondence for the public, business owners, property owners, lawyers and others related to municipal by-law violations and use confirmation.
  • Issue Provincial Offence Notices and Informations under the Provincial Offences Act and attend court, as necessary, to ensure compliance with Municipal By-laws.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and requirements

  • Experience related to the duties listed above, normally acquired through the completion 3 year diploma in Law and Security, Municipal Planning or closely related field and 2 – 3 years relevant bylaw enforcement experience. Candidates with an equivalent education and experience may be considered.
  • A valid Class G drivers licence with a good driving record. Successful candidates will be required to provide a current driver’s abstract prior to their start date to confirm their licence is held in good standing and that it has not been suspended or revoked under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) or Criminal Code of Canada in the last 5 years. The City of Guelph will take into consideration the number of demerit points and/or nature of the infractions to determine if it meets our requirement.
  • Excellent customer service skills and have a sincere focus on quality customer service.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills with the ability to communicate with all levels of staff, stakeholders and the general public.
  • Intermediate skills with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and Outlook).
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Knowledge of Zoning bylaws and the Planning Act as it relates to the Official Plan, minor variances and zoning amendment processes.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Able to perform the physical requirements of the job which includes walking, sitting and standing for extended periods of time; climbing, crawling and stooping will also be required on a regular basis.
  • A satisfactory Police Record Check would be required at time of offer.
  • Successful completion of training from the Municipal Law Enforcement Officers’ Association of Ontario would be an asset.
  • Familiarity of the Provincial Offences Act and Municipal By-laws would be considered an asset.
  • Experience with AMANDA software would be an asset.

Hours of work35 hours per week Monday to Friday, between the hours of 8:00am to 4:30pm.

Pay/SalaryCUPE 973 Grade 9: $39.04 - $47.98 per hour
