Job summary

A local non-profit organization in Alberta is seeking mature young adults to volunteer as recreation therapy mentors for youth involved in the criminal justice system. Volunteers will participate in weekly activities, document progress, and undergo necessary background checks. A valid driver's license and own transportation are essential. Ideal candidates will commit for at least one year and be available on Tuesday evenings. This role is pivotal in supporting youth and enriching their lives through recreational engagement.

Qualifications

  • Willing to undergo a background or police records check.
  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • Must be comfortable commuting to the opportunity location.
  • Must own a cell phone.

Summary

  • Meet with a youth once a week at a recreation facility in Calgary, or via virtual online platform.
  • Enthusiastically participate in various leisure activities based on the youth’s interests and treatment goals.
  • Write a progress note after each meeting documenting details of the intervention.
  • Be available Tuesday evenings from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm.
  • Provide a means of transportation and a stable internet connection.
  • Complete a Police Criminal Record Check and a Child Intervention Check.

Time Commitment

Applicants will be offered an interview to ensure a best fit for the FAP. If successful, the applicant will receive onboarding documentation and an online orientation. New mentors will attend approximately 12 hrs of in‑person training. A minimum 1‑year commitment is required.
