Job description

We are Community Leaders:

Ka Ni Kanichihk Inc. is a nonprofit, community-based, Indigenous-led human services organization that provides a range of Indigenous-identified programs and services that focus on the wholeness, wellness, and building on the strengths and resilience of Indigenous People.

About the Role:

Under the direction of the Program Coordinator, theHousing Navigator(s) offer youth (from 16 to 29 years of age) resource and advocacy in navigating multiple networks and stakeholders and such as housing, transitional supports from EIA, primarily focusing on the prevention of homelessness and securing safe, sustainable housing for youth and those who are exiting CFS care. They will use both external community resource and partners and internally resources and programs offered at Ka Ni Kanichihk as well by referring youth to programs and services available at Ka Ni Kanichihk by embedding cultural supports, access to traditional ways of being, with a two-eyed seeing lens.

What You Bring:

  • Two (2) years’ directly related experience working with at risk youth and mentorship;
  • Knowledge of independent living practices and mentorship principles;
  • Knowledge of issues facing youth who are transitioning from the child welfare system to independence;
  • Knowledge of the child welfare system and available community resources available to youth;
  • Ability to schedule and facilitate group sessions with youth;
  • Carry out appropriate record keeping functions including report writing, case notes and data collection, etc.;
  • Strong organizational skills, computer proficiency, excellent communication both written and oral, and professional work behavior;
  • Must be respectful, sensitive, and responsive to gender, race, ethnicity, socio-economic status and sexual orientation as demonstrated in ability to communicate and interact with other staff and youth;
  • Exemplify the qualities of honesty, integrity, fairness, empathy, patience and trustworthiness when dealing with youth;
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to engage and to establish working relationships as a means of achieving goals and affecting change;
  • Proven team player who demonstrates flexibility and adaptability;
  • Ability to work independently and under stress;
  • Current Emergency First Aid Certificate;
  • Current CPR, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certificate is an asset;
  • Clear Drivers Abstract and access to a vehicle;
  • Clear Criminal Record Check, Child Abuse Registry Check and Prior Contact Check
  • Must be prepared to work 40 hours a week (or 20 hours/week if Part Time) with flexible hours including some weekends, and evenings.
