Job summary

A regional government in Whitby is seeking a Works Technician 1 - (GIS) to provide GIS data and support. The successful candidate will digitize and maintain infrastructure data and assist clients with GIS applications. The ideal applicant will possess a relevant diploma and GIS certification, along with skills in ESRI ArcGIS and Microsoft Office. A valid Ontario 'G' Driver's License is required. This position offers a competitive salary with a starting rate of $40.13 per hour.

Job description

Works Technician 1 - (GIS)

As part of the Infrastructure Analytics Division, the successful candidate will report to the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Supervisor.

The incumbent will :
  • Provide data and maps to clients in the form of maps, data tables, queries, files, images and summarizations by extracting spatial and tabular data from the linear infrastructure of Water, Sanitary / Storm Sewer and other related data
  • Digitize, edit and revise Regional water, sanitary, storm and other infrastructure systems data and drawings
  • Provide training and user support for various applications related to GIS and Infrastructure data
  • Create and update intersection / Valve Location System drawings and related data
  • Communicate with clients and co‑workers in writing and verbally
  • Respond to inquiries from clients, co‑workers and the public and participate in client meetings
The successful applicant will possess :
  • A post secondary diploma in Civil, Environmental or related Technology field
  • A post graduate GIS Specialist Certificate or equivalent
  • Experience and training related the ESRI ArcGIS software platform
  • Knowledge of digital mapping and GIS technology skills, techniques in topology and spatial analysis, geographic data exchange formats and projections and Relational Database Management
  • Knowledge in the review of engineering drawings and record keeping principles in Construction and Asset Management
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), AutoCAD and ArcGIS software
  • An open and respectful approach to engaging colleagues with diverse perspectives
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, effective customer service, teamwork, problem solving, analytical and organizational skills
  • A valid Ontario 'G' Driver's License and the use of a reliable vehicle
CUPE 1764 Salary Grade 5

This position is with Salary Grade 5 and will be paid at the following hourly rates :

  • Start: $40.13 - Six Month: $42.36 - Job: $44.59
