Job description

JOB SUMMARY:

The Workplace Safety and Health Officer, reporting to the Assistant Superintendent of Staff Services, is responsible for promoting, educating, and implementing safety and health initiatives, policies, and procedures across the Division. This role ensures compliance with all relevant legislation and fosters a safe environment for students, staff, and visitors throughout our forty-one schools and satellite locations.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

As the Safety and Health Officer, you will:

  • Promote and educate on the importance of workplace safety and health.
  • Develop and implement Divisional safety and health programs and policies.
  • Conduct safety audits of each facility in the division; with specific emphasis on completion of Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and Safe Work Procedures (SWP).
  • Coordinate joint inspections with provincial government departments and fire departments, and report results to administrators and senior management.
  • Create and deliver training presentations for health and safety matters.
  • Acts as a resource to the workplace safety & health committees and site representatives.
  • Report workplace incident/injury reports to the workplace safety & health government authority.
  • Conducts Construction sites inspections.
  • Participate in post–accident investigations; respond, evaluate, report, and provide assessments/recommendations as required.
  • Provide leadership and expertise to the Divisional Safety & Health Committee(s) and act as a resource to the workplace safety & health committees and site representatives.
  • Reviews all investigations from school and work sites and will compile, track and identify trends for all incident reports determining areas requiring improvement related to Health and Safety.

EDUCATION

  • Completion in a diploma or degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, or a related field OR a combination of education and experience may be considered AND:
  • Recognized certifications such as:
    • First Aid, CPR, AED and WHIMIS certifications required.
    • Canadian Registered Safety Professional) preferred.
    • Certified Health and Safety Consultant) preferred.
    • ISO Lead Auditor Certification or knowledge of applicable standards preferred.

EXPERIENCE

  • Three to Five years of experience in a similar position is required.
  • Experience conducting workplace inspections, risk assessments, incident investigations, audits and evaluations is required.
  • Experience developing and facilitating training programs is required.
  • Experience leading joint Safety & Health Committees is required.Intimate knowledge of provincial workplace Safety & Health legislation, public health standards and communicable disease protocols, fire and buildings codes WHMIS, First Aid Regulation and Workplace Hazardous Materials compliance is required.

Desired:

  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience coordinating emergency preparedness and occupational hygiene initiative.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Excellent leadership skills are required.
  • Knowledge of all relevant safety and health Acts and Regulations is required.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) are required.
  • Ability to train and present information to all levels of an organization is required.
  • Ability to work with little supervision and demonstrate initiative to implement change while acting as an effective team member is required.
  • Excellent facilitation and presentation skills are required.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills are required.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work effectively to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment is required.
  • Strong computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and presentation software (MS Office preferred.)
  • Ability to effectively research, compile and report technical information is required.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector Search.
  • Clear report from the Child Abuse Registry.
  • Review and comply with Divisional policies and guidelines.
  • Continued employment is subject to maintaining legal eligibility to work in Canada.
  • Valid Driver’s License, clear Driver Abstract and access to reliable vehicle required
