Job summary

FortisOntario is seeking a Work Methods and Safety Specialist to lead and support HSE initiatives regionally and corporately. You will resolve safety concerns, participate in investigations, audits, and program development, and help maintain the HSEMS across multiple locations.

The role requires strong leadership, safety knowledge, and excellent communication skills, with travel to FortisOntario sites as required. A Canadian trade certification with five years’ experience is preferred.

Qualifications

• Certified electrical utilities tradesperson with 5 years Journeyperson experience.
• Thorough knowledge of work methods, safety applications and procedures.
• Solid understanding of electrical distribution systems.
• CSRT, CUSP or Safety Auditor training preferred.
• Knowledge of OHSA and safety regulations.
• Experience with ISO 45001/14001 and HSEMS in a unionized environment.
• Strong leadership; ability to manage multiple projects and teams.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills.
• Valid Ontario G driver's license with clean record.
• Willingness to travel to FortisOntario locations as required.

Responsibilities

• Resolve health, safety and environmental concerns via investigations, worker concerns, inspections, and audits.
• Develop, revise and maintain HSE programs and documentation aligned with ISO standards.
• Monitor and maintain HSEMS and related policies; coordinate with external bodies and unions.
• Provide ongoing safety training and effective communications on HSE changes.

Job description

Reporting to the Manager, Health, Safety & Environment ("HSE") and working closely with operations staff, the Work Methods and Safety Specialist (“WMSS”) will provide leadership, support, and expertise to establish, manage, assist and monitor functions associated with HSE at a regional and corporate level.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the resolution of Health Safety and Environmental concerns and issues that arise through incident investigations, employee concerns, work observations, workplace inspections, audits and the HSE Management System ("HSEMS") program at all designated locations. This position will take a supportive role in the development of new and revision(s) of existing HSE programs; preparation, monitor effectiveness and maintenance of policies, work methods procedures, programs and initiatives; ensure documents with respect to the HSEMS are maintained and consistent with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 standards. The position will represent FortisOntario on external boards and committees as deemed appropriate by the Manager, Health, Safety & Environment.

The WMSS will promote a strong culture of safety compliance and awareness at all levels of the organization and will provide or facilitate ongoing training and communications pertaining to all HSE information and any legislative changes that may affect FortisOntario. The WMSS will develop, maintain and communicate with all internal and external legislative parties, such as but not limited to, the Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks, Infrastructure Health & Safety Association, Electricity Distributors Association, health and safety committee members and all HSE staff from other FortisOntario subsidiaries.

The successful candidate can be hired to work out of any of FortisOntario's operating locations: Fort Erie, Cornwall, Gananoque, or Sault Ste. Marie

Preference will be for a candidate that meets the following attributes,skills andqualifications:

• Certified electrical utilities industry tradesperson with five (5) years’ experience at the Journeyperson level would be considered an asset.
• Thorough knowledge of work methods, safety applications and work procedures.
• Solid understanding of electrical distribution systems.
• Certification as a Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CSRT), Canadian Utility Safety Professional (CUSP) and/or Health and Safety Auditor Training would be preferred.
• Strong working knowledge and understanding of internal and external safety rules and legislation safety requirements, including the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations.
• Experience with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 standards, HSEMS, UWPC, EUSR and experience in a unionized environment.
• Demonstrated leadership skills, proven ability to both lead and work within a team environment. Ability to plan, prioritize and execute multiple projects and initiatives within established timelines/budget.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills with the ability to create and deliver presentations and training programs tailored to various audience types.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Ontario “G” driver’s license with a clean driving abstract.
• Travel to other FortisOntario work locations, Work methods conferences and other Fortis Inc locations as required.

• This role offers a base compensation range $90 500 - $113 100 of based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
