Job summary

BC SPCA Wild ARC in Victoria, British Columbia, is seeking a Wildlife Rehabilitator to participate in all wildlife care duties and the daily operation of the centre. This includes rescue, rehabilitation, and teaching staff to uphold BC SPCA standards.

The role requires handling a demanding workload, weekend and holiday availability, and strong teamwork. The position is temporary full-time until September 30, with hourly wages and on-site work at Wild ARC.

Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years of post-secondary studies in Biological Sciences, with Bachelor's degree preferred.
• Minimum 2 years' wildlife rehabilitation or husbandry experience.
• Basic rehabilitation skills certification; IWRC/NWRA standards knowledge.
• Strong animal care knowledge and familiarity with BC wildlife regulations.
• Ability to work long hours, weekends, nights, and holidays.
• Valid BC driver's license and clean abstract; criminal record check.
• Proficiency with computer data entry and record keeping.

Responsibilities

• Participate in daily animal care including admission, rescue, triage, examination, treatment, and release.
• Answer phones, interact with the public, veterinarians, and government entities to maintain operations.
• Liaise with other rehabilitation groups and stay current with best practices.
• Ensure facility hygiene and safety protocols.
• Train and supervise interns and volunteers; conduct workshops.
• Maintain detailed patient records and data entry.

About the Position:

The Wildlife Rehabilitator will participate in all wildlife care duties and the daily operation of the centre, including rescue and rehabilitation of wildlife, in addition to maintenance of facilities and cleaning. By telephone and in person, the successful candidate will promote the BC SPCA philosophy and mandate with respect to wildlife and animal welfare. You will work in a humane, professional, and responsible manner, and encourage by teaching and example, other staff and volunteers to show the same qualities. You will maintain operations to BC SPCA Wild ARC guidelines in conjunction with IWRC/NWRA minimum standards for wildlife rehabilitation.

Some specific duties:

• Participate in all daily animal care duties including admission, rescue, triage, examination, laboratory and x-ray diagnostics, treatment, diet planning, food preparation and feeding, euthanasia, and release
• Perform duties as required including answering phone calls, interacting with the public, veterinarians, government, etc. in order to maintain centre operations
• Liaise with other rehabilitation organizations and perform regular research to ensure highest standards of animal care; stay abreast of current wildlife rehabilitation practices and communicate with regional, national, and international wildlife rehabilitation associations
• Ensure facility hygiene and adherence to health and safety protocols
• Assist in the training and management of interns and volunteers; develop, coordinate, and conduct workshops for training
• Maintain detailed records including patient-files, care instructions, and patient log book; perform data entry of files and analysis or records
• Rescue and transport wildlife
• Participate in cage design, construction, and maintenance as required
• Pick up supplies and donations as required
• Attend and participate in team meeting, training, workshops and other projects as required
• Monitor the daily operation of the centre in the absence of the Manager and/or Senior Wildlife Rehabilitator
• Work shifts alone as required and perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications you need to have:

• Minimum 2 years of post-secondary studies in Biological Sciences, Animal Health Care, or a relevant field, Bachelor's degree preferred
• Minimum 2 years' wildlife rehabilitation or husbandry experience
• Basic rehabilitation skills certification from a provincial or international body; advanced skills is preferable; knowledge of IWRC/NWRA minimum standards
• Animal care experience with small to medium size wild mammals and birds including raptors, songbirds, waterfowl, seabirds, deer, raccoons, squirrels, seals
• Knowledge of natural history, identification, and behaviour of BC wildlife species; familiar with provincial and federal government wildlife regulations and rehabilitation permit requirements
• Capable of handling a demanding workload and long hours; work weekends, nights and statutory holidays as required
• Comfortable working with potentially hazardous conditions, such as contact with parasites, zoonotic diseases, dangerous animals, and chemicals
• Ability to work in all types of outdoor conditions
• Requires substantial physical labour (must be able to lift 50 pounds)
• Must be able to work on short notice and in emergency situations
• Must be vaccinated for tetanus and be willing to have rabies vaccination
• Strong teamwork skills and work ethic
• Excellent communication skills including telephone and public speaking
• Good physical stamina and health
• Intermediate level of computer literacy
• Familiar with working in a union environment
• Valid Class N or 5 BC Drivers' License and driver's abstract
• Legally entitled to work in Canada and must undergo a criminal record check
