Job description
Overview

This position will be a 6-month contract.

Responsibilities
  • Perform a variety of decomposition and leaching methods as per SGS’ Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). These will include acid digests, selective leaches, fusions and others as required.
  • Make basic reagents as necessary.
  • Provide feedback to supervisors and/or group leader regarding any issues encountered during procedures (e.g., unanticipated reactions, loss of samples).
  • Verify and adjust calibrations on a variety of lab equipment including dispensers, pipettes, balances and other equipment.
  • Ensure that work order documentation is complete in every respect and QC results are entered into SLIMS as necessary.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workbench area; spills are cleaned immediately; disposal is handled according to laboratory procedures including any special requirements for handling international soils.
  • Clean labware as required.
  • Ensure that equipment is maintained in good order; notify the supervisor or group leader of any damaged or defective equipment or equipment requiring complex adjustment.
  • Notify supervisor when consumables are nearing depletion to ensure they are reordered.
  • Keep all records and notebooks in good order, including work orders and equipment maintenance logs.
  • Adhere to assigned working hours unless otherwise approved by the Supervisor.
  • May be asked to work in other areas of the Geochemistry laboratory sections when required.
Qualifications
  • Education: Minimum high school diploma is required, but degree or diploma (or equivalent) in Chemistry related field is preferred.
  • Experience: 0-3 years of relevant work experience required or equivalent experience through education.
  • Strong analytical and mechanical skills.
  • Good hand/eye coordination when handling samples and lab equipment.
  • Ability to perform routine bench tests.
  • A willingness to learn new analytical tests, instrumentation and procedures.
  • Must be able to read, understand and follow work instructions in a safe, accurate and timely manner.
  • Candidates must demonstrate good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work well with others and independently.
  • Proven time management skills and a strong attention to detail.
  • Works well under pressure.
  • Extended hours and shift work may be required from time to time.
  • Travel to other SGS locations or client location may be required.
  • Ensures full compliance with the company’s Health & Safety, Code of Integrity, and Professional Conduct policies.
  • Must use good judgment to identify and resolve problems on the job. When in difficulty refer problems to his/her supervisor for resolution.
  • Intermediate level of creativity required in solving routine problems.
  • Proficient in using various type of computer software (Word, Excel, etc.).

Salary: $20.50 per hour
