Job summary

Alstom in St-Bruno, QC, is seeking a Welding Mechanical Design Engineer to design, develop, and industrialise welded structural assemblies for railway vehicles. You will coordinate with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality and Suppliers to ensure performance, manufacturability, and compliance throughout the product lifecycle.

You will contribute to welding technology improvements, support production sites across North America, and lead welding procedure development and qualification activities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in Mechanical/Manufacturing/Metallurgical Engineering or equivalent.
  • IWE certification or equivalent.
  • Professional Engineer designation (P.Eng./OIQ or equivalent).

Responsibilities

  • Design welded structural assemblies for railway vehicles.
  • Lead welding design activities and provide manufacturing support.
  • Develop and qualify welding procedures and WPQR/PQR.
  • Support weld inspections, audits, and certification programs.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing, Quality, Industrialisation and Suppliers.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of welding technologies.

Your future role

The Welding Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and industrialisation support of welded structural assemblies used in railway vehicles. The role combines structural design engineering expertise with advanced welding engineering knowledge to ensure that products are designed for structural performance, manufacturability, quality, certification and contractual compliance, and cost efficiency.

The position serves as the key interface between Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Industrialisation, Suppliers, and Shared Engineering Centres to ensure that welded structures meet project requirements throughout the product lifecycle.

The successful candidate will contribute directly to the continuous improvement of welding technologies, fabrication methods, and design standards while supporting production sites across North America.

  • Perform detailed Technical Review of 3D design of carbody structures, subassemblies, and welded components.
  • Needs to be proficient with following aspects of Structural Design:
    • Load cases and structural requirements.
    • Manufacturing and assembly constraints.
    • Weight, cost, and quality targets.
    • Ensure compliance with engineering standards, technical referential, and customer requirements.
  • Act as the structural design focal point for all welding-related design activities.

Participate at the definition and optimization of welded joint designs to ensure:

  • Structural integrity and fatigue performance.
  • Ease of fabrication and assembly.
  • Weld accessibility.
  • Distortion and residual stress control.
  • Cost-effective production.
  • Inspection accessibility and maintainability.
  • Support, at occasion, development and qualification of welding procedures including:
    • GMAW (MIG)
    • FCAW / MCAW
    • GTAW (TIG)
    • Resistance Spot Welding (RSW)
    • Laser Welding
  • Participate, at occasion, in welding procedure qualification activities (WPQR/PQR) and support development of Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).
  • Provide engineering support for welding inspections and manufacturing audits.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of welding certifications and compliance with applicable standards such as: EN, AWS and CSA
  • Support technology transfer of welding methods and best practices to manufacturing sites and suppliers.
  • Participate in the evaluation and introduction of new welding technologies and manufacturing processes.
Manufacturing & Quality Support
  • Provide technical support to manufacturing teams during production and troubleshooting activities.
  • Investigate welding non-conformities and manufacturing defects.
  • Lead or contribute to root cause analysis and corrective action implementation.
  • Participate in failure mode analysis and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support First Article Inspection (FAI), production readiness reviews, and manufacturing validation activities.
  • Collaborate with Industrialisation and Quality teams to improve product robustness and manufacturability.

  • External fabrication partners
  • Contribute to design reviews and technical risk assessments.
  • Provide weight and technical data for project reporting.
  • Support optimisation activities through collaboration with Structural Integrity specialists.
All about you
Education
  • Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or equivalent.
  • IWE (International Welding Engineer), or
Professional Membership
  • Professional Engineer designation (P.Eng. / OIQ or equivalent professional engineering registration).
Experience
Required
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in mechanical or structural engineering.
  • Experience designing welded structures in an industrial environment.
  • Experience with fabrication drawings and manufacturing documentation.
  • Experience supporting production, manufacturing, or industrialisation activities.
Preferred
  • Heavy manufacturing, transportation, aerospace, shipbuilding, or steel structure experience.
  • Experience with aluminium and stainless-steel welded assemblies.
  • Experience working with suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Experience supporting welding certification audits and qualification programs.
Languages
  • Bilingual French and English (written and spoken).
  • Spanish considered a strong asset.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in technical meetings and with manufacturing teams.
