Job Title: Ahous Hakuum Water Taxi Deck Hand
Hours of Work: Full Time (Monday to Friday) Fall/winter schedule
Place of Work: Maaqutusiis & Ahousaht Hahoulthee
Reports to: Assistant General Manager
Wage: $23/hr

Job Overview

Ahous Business Corporation is seeking a motivated and reliable individual to join our team as a Deck Hand for our water taxi operations on the MV Ahous Hakuum. The successful candidate will work closely with the vessel Captains to ensure the safe and smooth operating of the vessel, assist passengers and contribute to the overall positive experience of our maritime services.

Key Responsibilities
  • 1. Vessel Operations Support: Assist the Small Vessel Captain in the safe operation of the vessel, including handling lines, securing the vessel, and ensuring compliance with Transport Canada marine regulations and our Safety Management System (SMS) protocols.
  • 2. Passenger Assistance: Provide excellent customer service by assisting passengers with boarding, disembarking, and ensuring their comfort and safety during the journey.
  • 3. Safety Measures: Implement and maintain safety measures on board, including the proper use of life jackets, emergency equipment, completing the passenger manifest and adherence to SMS procedures.
  • 4. Collecting Payments: Collect passenger payments alongside the passenger manifest.
  • 5. Deck Maintenance: Assist in general maintenance tasks, including cleaning and organizing the deck, ensuring a tidy and safe working environment.
  • 6. Communication: Maintain clear communication with the Small Vessel Captain, fellow crew members, and passengers, following instructions and contributing to a cohesive team environment.
  • 7. Emergency Response: Be familiar with emergency procedures, including evacuation plans, and actively participate in drills and exercises to ensure preparedness.
  • 8. Loading and Unloading: Facilitate the loading and unloading of cargo and supplies, ensuring proper stowage and securing of items during transit.
  • 9. Community Engagement: Foster positive relationships with passengers and contribute to a welcoming and friendly atmosphere on board.
Qualifications
  • Basic understanding of maritime safety practices
  • Willingness to learn and follow instructions from the Captain and management
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Physical fitness and ability to perform manual tasks in a maritime environment
  • First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • Transport Canada Marine Basic First Aid certification (considered an asset)
  • Previous experience in a maritime or customer service role (considered an asset)
  • Healthy lifestyle
  • Very reliable
  • Strong work ethic, dependable, trustworthy, and motivated to responsibly show up for various shifts in a reliable, consistent and timely manner.
  • Work on call if necessary
