Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in hydrology, environmental science, earth science, water resources, civil engineering, or related field.
  • APEGA registration or eligibility to practice in Alberta.
  • 3+ years of relevant experience.
  • Strong Excel skills.
  • Experience with GoldSIM, MATLAB, and AutoCAD.
  • Experience with HEC-HMS or other hydrology software is an asset.
  • Knowledge of open pit mining operations and mine/tailings planning.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams across functions.
  • Strong organizational skills and problem-solving abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in site HSSE policies to promote a zero-incident environment.
  • Attend daily tailgate meetings.
  • Identify hazards and unsafe conditions and propose safety improvements.
  • Provide annual updates of the site-wide water balance and validate models.
  • Progress continuous improvement of water balance models using GoldSIM, MATLAB and Excel.
  • Plan future surface water infrastructure and tie it into the water management system.
  • Support field operations with technical guidance as needed.

Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking a Water Resources Engineer, EIT to work as an integrated member of our Energy & Resources – Mining team in a secondment role with the Long-Range Water Resources team of one of our key oil sands clients in Alberta. This role is located in Edmonton with quarterly trips to Calgary. This is an exciting opportunity for growth for a dynamic individual seeking an opportunity to provide support to a complex active mining operation in Canada

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Participating in and following site-specific Health Safety Security Environment (HSSE) policies with the goal of achieving zero workplace incidents and the promotion of a safe work environment for all
  • Participating in daily tailgate meetings
  • Identifying and reporting hazards and unsafe conditions and seeking to improve safety with reference to known policies and procedures
  • Provide annual update of the site wide water balance. Included in this is maintaining and validation the model, collaborating broadly to update inputs, analyzing and interpreting the results and defining potential scenarios, developing potential mitigations and recommendations, and reviewing outcomes with stakeholders.
  • This role would be responsible for progressing the continuous improvement of the model, ensuring continuity with the tailings mass balance and water quality forecasting models. This would involve working in GoldSIM, MATLAB, and Excel to integrate changes such as further refinement of time steps (annual to monthly), integrating the closed circuit and release water balances, and breaking down storage by facility.
  • This role may also be responsible for planning future infrastructure and tying it into the existing water management system. Scope is primarily mid to long range (1 to 15 year) planning, assessment, and design of surface water infrastructure to support the water management network at the Kearl oilsands site. Other types of work may include various water related desktop studies and updating standards and guidelines.
  • This role is primarily a planning role for future infrastructure but supports operations from a technical standpoint and would provide guidance to the field, when required.
Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • E.I.T or P.Eng with 3+ years' experience
  • Strong Excel skills
  • Experience with GoldSIM, MATLAB, and AutoCAD
  • Experience with HEC-HMS (and/or other hydrology software) is an asset
  • Knowledge of open pit mining operations and mine/tailings planning
  • Experience with water balance development
  • Understanding of surface water management and design
  • Experience or knowledge of oilsands tailings streams and fluid storage concepts is an asset
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability work in multidiscipline teams crossing various functions
  • Strong organizational skills, practical problem-solving skills and continuous improvement through critical thinking
  • Enjoys challenging and dynamic work
  • Ability to manage time to meet project schedules and budgets
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in hydrology, environmental science, earth science, water resources, civil engineering, or a related field
  • Registration, or eligibility for registration, with APEGA.
  • Valid safety training certificates relevant to fieldwork are an asset.
  • Previous hydrometric, environmental monitoring, or field-based data collection experience is an asset.
