Your Opportunity

The duties and responsibilities of a Vocational Instructor include continuing excellence in one’s field, instructional and professional duties, professional development and service.

Functions and Duties

Instructional duties may include any or all of the following:

  • Instructional (teaching assignments)
  • Course and program preparation and revision
  • Student contact
  • Student advising
  • Evaluation and marking of student work
  • Other functions related to instruction

Professional duties may include any or all of the following:

  • Curriculum development
  • Student registration
  • Pre-registration duties

Service may include any or all of the following:

  • School visitations
  • Participation on OC committees
  • Attendance at articulation meetings
  • Representing OC at other functions
  • Administrative and other duties

Professional development activity that is intended to promote teaching excellence, subject area competence, and technical competence in the area of professional or instructional expertise.

Education and Experience

A valid Canadian Aircraft Maintenance Engineer License (Maintenance “M1”/“M2” rating).

An undergraduate degree and post-secondary teaching experience are preferred; however, applicants with an equivalent combination of teaching and work experience may be considered. Aviation teaching experience would be an asset.

An Instructor’s Diploma or valid BC Teacher’s Certificate appropriate to the instructional assignment is preferred, and will be required following appointment in accordance with the Collective Agreement.

Six to ten years of recent relevant experience in some or all of the following:

  • Fixed-wing maintenance experience on general aviation and/or large transport category aircraft
  • Rotary maintenance experience in light, intermediate, medium or heavy helicopters
  • Aircraft structural repair experience related to sheet metal and composite.
Skills and Abilities

Candidates must be committed to a team approach, demonstrate good written and oral English skills and have good interpersonal skills. The ideal candidate will have an exceptional teaching record with a demonstrated learner-centred teaching philosophy. Successful applicants will be an integral part of the team that will help Okanagan College realize the promise of a world-class college. Candidates will be comfortable in a computerized environment and demonstrate knowledge of programs relevant to their discipline. The successful applicant will be able to encourage communication between students and faculty.

Preferred Qualifications

Please note that, as per Article 36 of theBCGEUVocational Instructors Collective Agreement, all employees on regular appointment, except those employees exempted from this provision by OC, will be required to obtain the BC Provincial Instructor’s Diploma, valid BC Teacher’s Certificate appropriate to the instructional assignment, or equivalent qualification as determined by OC within a maximum of two years from date of appointment in the regular appointment category. This period may be extended by OC because of extenuating circumstances.

Desired Start Date: 02/02/2026

Position End Date (if temporary): The instructional schedule typically consists of 37 weeks of instruction with classes typically held Monday to Friday, 6 hours per day. A typical instructional week consists of 27.5 hours of instructional time and 2.5 hours of non-student contact time.

As a continuing, full-time instructor, take full advantage of your 21 days of Curriculum and Professional Development time to pursue the enhancement of course materials as well as the enhancement of your current skills and knowledge. Also take advantage of available Professional Development funding allotted to employees every fiscal year to broaden your horizons beyond the scope of your current subject area.

The scheduling of the program naturally allows you to typically take your 43 days of vacation during the summer months when you can take full advantage of the warm temperatures and gorgeous lakes the Okanagan has to offer. With stat holidays off and the holiday closure around Christmas, you will have time to spend the holidays at home with family and friends.

Annual Salary/Hourly Rate: Salary range $71,846 to $115,129 annually; normal starting salary between $78,872 and $85,897 annually, dependent on relevant education and experience. Appointment Vocational - Regular Full-time
