Job summary

Vision Loss Rehabilitation Canada (VLRC) is a national health services organization dedicated to empowering Canadians living with vision loss to live safely and independently. Our certified specialists provide client-centered rehabilitation, mobility training, and daily living skills programs in homes, workplaces, and communities across the country.

This full-time, permanent role in New Westminster or Abbotsford supports rehabilitation plans under the supervision of Rehabilitation Specialists,

Qualifications

• Post-secondary education in a Rehabilitation Assistant program or related field preferred.
• Previous experience with individuals who are blind or partially sighted is an asset.
• Clean Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check may be required.
• BC Class 5 driving license is required.

Responsibilities

• Under supervision, receive referrals and assist with rehabilitation plans.
• Provide input into planning, implementation, modification, and evaluation of plans.
• Assist clients with independent living skills, low vision aids, and technology.
• Maintain inventory of adaptive devices and demonstrate products.
• Monitor and report progress to the rehabilitation specialist.
• Provide direction to clients and collaterals to maximize rehabilitation.
• Maintain case data and documentation per VLRC procedures.

Position Title: Vision Rehabilitation Assistant

Location: New Westminster or Abbotsford, BC

Term: Full-time, Permanent - Existing Vacancy

Reports To: Manager, Healthcare Operations

Salary: $29.67/hour

I. Scope and Summary of Primary Responsibilities

This position is responsible for completing a broad range of responsibilities and duties that will enhance the provision of Vision Loss Rehabilitation Services. The position requires a highly competent and well-organized health care professional who values safety, security and patient wellness above all else. The primary responsibilities include working in collaboration with our ACVREP certified Rehabilitation Specialists in the areas of Independent Living, Orientation and Mobility and Low Vision to carry out established rehabilitation activities or programs.

II. Essential Functions

This position entails, but is not limited to the following general responsibilities:

• Under the direction of the Rehabilitation Specialists, receives referrals and assists with the implementation of rehabilitation plans/program.
• As part of a multidisciplinary team and in consultation with the specialist, provides input into the planning, implementation, modification, and evaluation of the rehabilitative treatment plans.
• Provides individuals with sight loss, the opportunity of reinforcement and practice of adaptive skills for independent living, in areas of personal management, household management, basic indoor orientation & mobility skills, low vision aids, basic keyboarding and technology.
• Assists the specialist with the maintenance and inventory of adaptive devices as appropriate and demonstrates consumer products and low vision aids.
• Assists in monitoring and evaluating treatment and care plans and reporting observations and progress to the specialist.
• Provides functional direction to the client and other collaterals to maximize the client's rehabilitation process.
• Maintains all case data and documentation consistent with VLRC Systems and Procedures.
• Collaborates with rehabilitation team in service delivery, coordinates travel schedules and facilitates program development.

Relationships

• Close working relationship with all members of the rehabilitation team.
• Provides support and consultation to individuals and their families regarding adjustment to vision loss.
• Attends and participates in multi-disciplinary team meetings.
• Promotes an understanding and awareness of vision health related issues through consultation, public education, and in-service training.

III. Qualifications

• Skilled in Microsoft software applications and ability to effectively care for computer hardware and learn various applications as applicable for the position

Experience and Education

• Post-secondary education and/or prior experience in a Rehabilitation Assistant program, Occupational or Physical Therapy Assistant program, Social Work or related field preferred.
• Previous working/volunteering experience working with individuals who are blind or partially sighted or a combined loss of hearing and sight asset.
• Clean Criminal Record required; Criminal Reference Check required for vulnerable populations.
• Valid BC Class 5 driving license is required.
