Job summary

University Health Network (UHN) is seeking a Veterinary Technician for our Animal Resource Centre. You will perform animal husbandry, health monitoring and veterinary procedures across multiple species, under supervision of clinicians and lab staff.

Responsibilities include colony management, health monitoring, sample collection, record keeping and QA to ensure compliance with provincial and federal guidelines. A strong team player with meticulous work habits is essential.

Qualifications

• Completion of a community college program in Veterinary Technology or recognized equivalent.
• Registration with Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Science as a Registered Laboratory Animal Technician preferred.
• Minimum one year practical and related experience and/or 2 years on-the-job training required.
• Previous experience within a laboratory animal facility.
• Previous experience working with large animals in a research setting.
• Experience handling laboratory animals; both rodents and larger animal species.
• WHMIS training.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs.
• No known allergies to animals.
• Exercise initiative and time management skills.
• Effective organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
• Compliance with confidentiality requirements.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

• Performing feeding, watering, cage changing per ARC SOP for the species.
• Ensuring appropriate environmental enrichment (EE) for the species per ARC SOP.
• Taking care of special research models per protocol (e.g., immune deficient mice).
• Caring for large animal species per protocol.
• Maintaining animal housing rooms and equipment.
• Handling biohazard areas following SOP, PPE and decontamination procedures.
• Monitoring animal health, updating sick cases and treatment sheets.
• Carrying out veterinary instructions including drug administration.
• Updating records and notifying lab groups of animal issues.
• Performing necropsy or tissue collection as needed.
• Ensuring compliance with provincial and federal guidelines for housing and use of research animals.
