JOBS AND OPPORTUNITIES

Veterinary Officer and Research Coordinator in BHA

The British Horseracing Authority is the governing and regulatory body for British Horseracing with responsibility for ensuring the continuing integrity, welfare of participants and successful development of the sport.

We are currently looking to recruit an enthusiastic, dedicated and motivated veterinary surgeon to join the existing friendly and supportive Equine Health and Welfare Department in a new position as Veterinary Officer and Research Coordinator.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the coordination of research projects between the BHA, LGC (the BHA’s partner analytical laboratory), Newmarket, and the Centre for Racehorse Studies, Newmarket. In addition, a number of raceday and non-raceday Veterinary Officer duties will be required, including anti-doping testing and welfare assessments.

Essential attributes include an academic background with recent equine research experience (either clinical or lab-based), an understanding of analytical chemistry and pharmacology, and knowledge of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act. Key responsibilities will include preparing and assessing research reports, active contribution to peer-reviewed publications, presenting at veterinary and scientific meetings (both national and international), and management of the research financial budget.

Given the nature of the role, you will need to have a full, valid driving license, preferably clean. Applicants must be eligible for registration with the RCVS and either hold, or be willing to train for, a Home Office Personal License. You must be prepared to work with a high degree of flexibility, involving working unsociable hours including weekends and bank holidays. Excellent communication, organisation, and interpersonal skills are a must, along with the ability to work with and successfully lead a team.

As the needs of the business change, this role will change accordingly; therefore, this document should be viewed as guidelines which are subject to change. We welcome enquiries from everyone and value diversity in our workforce.
