Job summary

Fundy Veterinarians Ltd in central Nova Scotia is offering a veterinary externship for 2 to 8 weeks, designed for 3rd and 4th year students. You will work closely with a supervising veterinarian to gain hands-on experience across history taking, exams, treatment planning, dentistry, and surgeries as appropriate.

A travel/living expense stipend may be available for clinical externs. Externship emphasizes communication with the medical team, staff, and clients, providing real-life experiences

Qualifications

• Externship in veterinary medicine with supervision by licensed veterinarians.
• Hands-on experience gathering histories, exams, treatment plans, and dentistry.
• Exposure to diagnostics, surgical observation or participation, and medical management.

Responsibilities

• Gather patient histories and perform physical exams under supervision.
• Assist or perform dental services and participate in surgical procedures as allowed.
• Develop treatment plans and discuss care with clients and the healthcare team.

Fundy Veterinarians Ltd is a mixed animal practice that has been serving clients in central Nova Scotia for over 50 years. We have 6 large animal, and 5 small animal vets, shared between two locations. Students can expect exposure to a broad range of experiences and interests from our veterinarians and support staff; a true sample of real life beyond vet school.

Students will work closely with the supervising veterinarian to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creation of treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. Externships at Fundy Veterinarians are designed for 3rd and 4th year veterinary students.

Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend.
