Job summary

A veterinary healthcare organization in Sherwood Park offers an externship experience for veterinary students to gain hands-on clinical skills in a supportive environment. Students will work alongside veterinarians to learn about patient care, diagnostics, and surgical procedures over a period of two to eight weeks. Eligible students may receive a travel/living expense stipend, making this an excellent opportunity to enhance their education and practical skills in veterinary medicine.

Qualifications

• Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education are encouraged to apply.
• Hands-on experience in veterinary practices during the externship.
• Two to eight weeks duration depending on schedules.

Responsibilities

• Gain experience working closely with Associate Veterinarians.
• Assisting in daily operations of the hospital.
• Participating in various veterinary care activities.
• Diagnostics.

• Observing, assisting or performing surgical procedures.

Job description

An externship experience at an NVA hospital will give students the unique opportunity to understand the day‑to‑day operations of the practice, and to gain valuable hands‑on clinical experience. Although every NVA hospital is unique, we all have some things in common: an environment that is supportive, committed to excellent medicine, and provides exceptional service to animals and the people who love them.

Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in:

• Gathering patient histories
• Performing physical exams
• Creating treatment plans
• Diagnostics
• Dentistry services
• Observing, assisting or performing surgical procedures
• Medical management of patients
• Practicing communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients

Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students (regardless of class year) are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
