Job summary

The City of Saskatoon is seeking a Water Treatment Operator/Assistant to support water treatment plant operations under the supervision of the Water Operations Manager and Operations Coordinator. You will perform a variety of duties that keep the plant running smoothly.

This CUPE 47 role requires a Class 4 Water Treatment Operator Certification, four years’ experience in a Class 4 facility, and valid Saskatchewan licences (5, 3A as applicable).

Qualifications

• Class 4 Water Treatment Operator Certification required.
• Four years of water treatment experience in a Class 4 facility.
• Valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver’s Licence required.
• Fireman’s Certificate for pressure vessels or ability to obtain within six months.
• First aid and CPR certificates must be current.
• Ability to obtain Class 3A Driver’s Licence within six months.
• Clean driver’s abstract from SGI.
• Knowledge of water treatment procedures and safety practices.
• Ability to operate forklifts and tractors.

Responsibilities

• Perform duties of Plant Operator and Assistant Plant Operator as required.
• Assist with data entry, stores functions, hazardous material inventory and documentation.
• Assist with mechanical maintenance duties.
• Maintain plant grounds and equipment; perform building and process equipment cleaning.
• Troubleshoot process equipment and lead remote site preventative maintenance.
• Support operation of Residual Handling Facility and solids removal.
• Assist engineering with pilot projects and new procedures.

Job Summary

Under supervision of the Water Operations Manager (Water Treatment) and the direction of the Operations Coordinator, this position performs a variety of duties assisting with water treatment plant operations.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Performs duties of the Plant Operator and Assistant Plant Operator, as required.
• Assists with data entry, stores functions, hazardous material inventory and work procedure documentation, as required
• Assists with mechanical maintenance duties.
• Assists with the maintenance of plant grounds, including general equipment maintenance.
• Performs maintenance and cleaning of related buildings, operational infrastructure and process equipment.
• Performs in-depth technical troubleshooting of process equipment
• Leads remote site preventative maintenance program.
• Assists with the operation of the Residual Handling Facility and solids removal process.
• Assist engineering group with pilot projects and development of new operating procedures.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Class 4 Water Treatment Operator Certification from the Operator Certification Board of Saskatchewan
• Four years’ water treatment experience, working as an operator in a Class 4 facility.
• Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
• Possession of or ability to obtain within six months of hire a Fireman’s Certificate for pressure vessels.
• Possession of valid, recognized first aid and CPR certificates.
• Ability to obtain a valid Saskatchewan Class 3A Driver’s Licence within six months of hire.
• Current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.
• Knowledge of water treatment procedures, operations and general practices applied to the care and safe operation of plant equipment.
• Knowledge of methods, chemicals, materials and tools used in water treatment.
• Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
• Ability to operate large equipment such as forklifts and tractors.
• Ability to make minor repairs to water treatment plant equipment.
• Ability to perform duties in a safe and efficient manner while maintaining a clean work site.
• Ability to record meter readings and make simple arithmetic calculations accurately.
• Ability to work with hazardous chemicals such as ammonium hydroxide, lime, and chlorine.
• Ability to remain calm in emergency situations.
• Ability to supervise the work of subordinate staff and assume responsibility for the operation of a shift.
• Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with other employees and the public.
• Physical ability to perform the assigned duties.
• Skill in the use of a computer with word-processing, spreadsheet and other data-processing software.

Weekly Hours:38.75

Salary Range:$76,837.44to$84,289.92 CADper annum (2023rates)
