Binnie is looking for a Utility Locate Technician based out of our Burnaby location. This is a full-time, permanent position, working primarily outdoors in the field.

As part of our Geomatics Group, you will be responsible for identifying underground utilities, marking locates in the field and capturing field data using GPS or surveying equipment.

This is a dynamic role through which you will gain valuable work experience and knowledge within a supportive group of staff.

Your Role

  • Conduct site assessment 'walk around', including risk assessment, identifying other activities onsite and surrounding infrastructure, and reviewing proposed works with ground disturber/earthworks contractor(s).
  • Perform desktop analysis, mapping and AutoCAD drafting.
  • Verify, identify and label public and private utility mains and other services located primarily underground.
  • Utilize locating equipment / geophysical tools including Electromagnetic (EM) and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR).
  • Research the history of utility in area, document irregularities, enforce utility separation requirements (ie. when as-built shows a distance separating utilities), and provide support for clients as needed.
  • Produce field notes and sketches, scale sketches, photographic records, and written reports.
  • Select locate methods by distinguishing advantages/disadvantages of various locating equipment, selecting location technology based on utility type/materials/other factors, and considering required degree of accuracy.
  • Identify, and mitigate site specific safety risks such as working around heavy equipment, traffic; recognize excavation stability; electrical and gas safety; risks to the public; etc.

What You Bring

  • Minimum of 6 years of work experience as a Utility Locate Technician on locate projects of varying complexity.
  • Registration as a Registered Underground Utility Locator Technician (RULT) with ASTTBC.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Thorough knowledge of ASTTBC Code of Ethics and Practice Guidelines, and legislation pertinent to utility locating in BC -Sound knowledge of underground utility construction methods.
  • Proficient in using AutoCAD and GPS.
  • Strong ability to troubleshoot in the field.
  • The ability to think three dimensionally, visualize patterns and draw conclusions from limited information.
  • Proficient in gathering and compiling utility information with strong written communication skills, and ability to prepare various reports and documentation verifying marked utilities as per client specifications.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and collaboratively with all stakeholders.
  • Expert use of all utility locating equipment, including pipe and cable locators and ground penetrating radar (GPR) to identify and mark existing underground utilities.
  • Comfortable working in all weather conditions.
  • Experience with Geophysical Surveys/Land Surveying/Geomatics is an asset.
