Job description

The Underwriter continues the development of technical knowledge; they independently review group insurance (primarily life disability health and dental) policies to evaluate risk and determine acceptance of applications. The core skills of communication and relationship building are vital as they work closely with Customer Success New Business and Partnership Development to ensure a balance between attracting and retaining customers. This will be achieved by providing competitive insurance premiums and covering potential losses from claims.

Underwriter will:
  • Conduct new group insurance application and current business renewal process; evaluate and analyze risk using underwriting guidelines policies and principles to ensure profitability and competitiveness
  • Ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines policies and regulatory obligations throughout the underwriting process
  • Regularly review contracts and identify areas for improvement alignment and growth
  • Undertake strategic projects that contribute to the sustainability competitiveness and profitability of BBDs block
  • Support the review and maintenance of the BBD Underwriting FAQ document
  • Support the education of BBD and Partner Solutions teams about Underwriting
To be a successful Underwriter you will need:
  • Post-secondary education or equivalent experience
  • 2-4 years previous related work experience or equivalent in a similar role such as insurance group benefits or client service
  • Good analytical problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Good verbal and conflict resolution ability; very good written and listening skills
  • Good organizational skills & attention to detail
All-star candidates will have:
  • GBA designation under CEBS program
  • Bilingualism in both official languages English & French
  • Knowledge of group benefits and / or insurance industry
  • Focus on math risk assessment or economics
