Job description

Job Title: U.S. Tax Manager
Job ID: 89965
Location: Vancouver, British Columbia– 3 days a week onsite

Overview: Reporting to the Director, Global Tax, the U.S. Tax Manager is responsible for overseeing the organization’s dynamic United States tax function. The U.S. Tax Manager is familiar with key concepts of U.S. taxation, including corporate tax, indirect taxes (sales and use tax), and other tax regimes that may apply, such as gross receipts and franchise taxes. The U.S. Tax Manager works closely with Financial Reporting, AR & Billing, and Payroll teams to ensure U.S. tax compliance is timely and accurate. This role takes a broad strategic view of the tax function while providing comprehensive analysis and problem-solving of tax matters and participating in international tax matters outside of the U.S.

What you will be doing:
Direct Tax
  • Lead the preparation and primary review of the portfolio of interim and year-end corporate tax provisions for the United States across 13+ jurisdictions.
  • Own the financial reporting impact of U.S. corporate taxes, including recognition of corporate tax expense, financial statement disclosures, and book-to-tax analyses.
  • Own compliance with U.S. corporate income taxes and required information reporting, including coordination with external consultants and comprehensive review of deliverables.
  • Monitor corporate tax thresholds and research when corporate tax nexus has been established, developing project plans to obtain required registrations in collaboration with internal teams, external tax advisors, and counsel.
  • Collaborate with the Tax Manager on the documentation and implementation of transfer pricing strategies and policies for foreign subsidiary entities, particularly the United States, including modeling and engagement with external consultants as required.
  • Manage tax-related audit queries and information requests.
  • Stay current with relevant U.S. and international tax laws, trends, and developments and advise senior management on their implications.
  • Identify and assist with tax planning strategies in conjunction with senior management and external consultants.
  • Perform ad hoc tax analysis regarding the tax implications of transactions as required.
Indirect Tax
  • Own compliance with sales and use tax and other taxes, including gross receipts and franchise taxes, across a growing portfolio of U.S. jurisdictions.
  • Review work prepared by junior staff to support tax filings.
  • Monitor sales tax nexus thresholds and research when sales tax nexus has been established.
  • Collaborate with the Tax Manager to ensure accurate sales taxability conclusions for the organization’s products and services by researching state and local sales tax legislation and applying it to the organization’s specific circumstances.
  • Lead the next phase of the sales tax engine implementation, including designing and optimizing processes to improve the efficiency and accuracy of sales tax collection, reporting, and remittance.
  • Manage internal and external tax inquiries and maintain tax documentation related to the taxability of services, including tax residency and exemption certificates.
Other Responsibilities
  • Due to the centralization of the Finance function in Vancouver, BC, and the organization’s highly integrated operations, the U.S. Tax Manager will have opportunities to participate in taxation-related work and projects involving other jurisdictions, including Canada and Europe.
  • Participate in ad hoc tax, accounting, and finance projects, analyses, and initiatives as required.
What you must have:
  • Minimum 3 years of U.S. tax experience in an accounting firm and/or industry. Experience in indirect and/or international corporate tax is an asset.
  • U.S. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Canadian Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) with at least 1 year of post-designation experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and application of U.S. corporate tax rules.
  • Knowledge of U.S. GAAP is required.
  • Familiarity with Canadian, United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Sweden corporate tax rules is an asset.
  • Familiarity with Canadian Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises (ASPE) is an asset.
  • Proven experience managing, coaching, and providing feedback to junior team members.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage time effectively.
  • Familiarity with NetSuite ERP, Salesforce CRM, or Avalara’s AvaTax sales tax engine is an asset.
