Qualifications

  • A High School Diploma or greater.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Current First Aid/CPR, class C or HCP level Certification, or greater.
  • Current driver’s license (G or equivalent).
  • At least 3 years of driving experience in Canada with a Driver’s Abstract clear of uninsurable convictions.
  • Current, clean criminal record check including vulnerable sector check.
  • Defensive Driving Course preferred.
  • Ability to meet and maintain health requirements.
  • Ability to proficiently operate computer, tablet and phone.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with ability to perform routine vehicle maintenance.
  • Proven ability to multi-task, prioritize and work in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Ability to work well independently.
  • Awareness and respect for the cultural diversity of clients.
  • Proficiency in French is an asset.
  • High level of integrity, confidentiality, and accountability.

Responsibilities

  • Protect and promote the welfare, dignity, and individual rights of our clients at all times.

  • Drive clients to medical appointments, shopping, personal care appointments, social events, etc.
  • Safely loading and unloading clients and mobility devices in vehicles, maneuvering wheelchairs.
  • Operate standard passenger vehicles and wheelchair vans safely and efficiently.
  • Conduct pre- and post-shift vehicle checks and report major concerns.
  • Inventory equipment and supplies; conduct cleaning of vehicle interiors/exteriors.
  • Decontaminate vehicles per infection control protocols.
  • Refuel vehicles and check fluid levels and tire pressures.
  • Assist with errands and supply pickups; support HAL functions as needed.
  • Assemble and set up operations equipment; provide continuation of service with oxygen administration as required.
  • Follow dress codes and PPE policies; adhere to infection control policies.
  • Assist the manager with incident follow-ups; participate in safety initiatives.
  • Provide ride-along training to volunteers and staff.
  • Report incidents, complaints, and accidents promptly to management.
  • Support organizational structure and safety initiatives.

Description

The Transportation Service Worker (TSW) provides effective transportation of clients with respect to their needs and confidentiality. They maintain and clean the company vehicles to Helping Hands standards and ensure the highest quality of client service and safety. They support with office functions and complete other duties as needed and assigned.

Description of Duties, Responsibility and Authority
  • Protect and promote the welfare, dignity, and individual rights of our clients at all times;
  • Adhere to the goals, policies, and aims of Helping Hands in all activities;
  • Driving clients to medical appointments, shopping, personal care appointments, social events, etc.;
  • Safely and appropriately loading and unloading clients and their mobility devices in vehicles, maneuvering and operating wheelchairs;
  • Operating both standard passenger vehicles and various types of wheelchair vans and multi-passenger units, safely and efficiently;
  • Conducting pre- and post-shift vehicle circle checks; when filling out circle checks; forward any major concerns to the Manager immediately;
  • Conducting inventories of equipment and supplies, including but not limited to, first aid kits, fire extinguishers, roadside safety kits, etc.;
  • Conducting cleaning of interiors and exteriors of vehicles, such as dusting, vacuuming, and cleaning windshields;
  • Conducting deep clean functions such as thorough vacuuming of all parts of vehicles, auto detailing, washing mats, washing vehicles and document as required;
  • Conducting decontamination functions of vehicles such as cleaning out bodily fluids in vehicles, following all infection control protocols;
  • Refueling vehicles and checking other fluid levels as part of circle checks, checking tire pressures, and other basic vehicle maintenance functions;
  • Picking up various supplies and conducting errands, as directed by management
  • Assist in Home at Last (HAL) functions and duties, as instructed;
  • Assemble and set up operations equipment, including furniture, office equipment, etc.;
  • Provide continuation of service, with respect to oxygen administration, as stipulated in Scope of Practice; properly and safely secure tanks and related equipment during transport;
  • Adhere to organizational dress codes and Personal Protective Equipment policies;
  • Follow all infection control policies and protocols, as established by the organization;
  • Ensure administrative functions are completed in a timely and efficient manner;
  • Assist the manager with assessing, investigating, and following up on incidents related to clients;
  • Ensure safety protocols and procedures are always adhered to; promote safe work activities by participating in safety initiatives, training, and attending safety meetings, as needed. This may also include acting as the Employee Safety Representative for the organization;
  • Follow all administrative and operational policies and procedures;
  • Participate in training modules, as directed by management;
  • Adhere to policies about vacation management;
  • Provide ride-along training to new volunteers and staff;
  • Bring to the attention of the Manager of Client Services any incidents, complaints, and/or accidents in the organization. Such issues are to be reported immediately or as soon as practical using the tools and procedures provided;
  • Adhering to and re-enforcing the organizational structure, providing support where needed to meet client needs;
  • Responding to organizational emergencies, as directed by management;
  • Regularly reviewing, comprehending, and adhering to the Transportation Manual; and
  • Any other duties, as assigned

Work Conditions
  • Will be required to work both indoors and outdoors.
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.

Due to the changing nature of the Organization’s role and relationship with funders, the duties and responsibilities of this position may change, from time to time, necessitating the delegation of other related duties within the Organization.

This position is created and maintained within the Organization through program funding through the Government of Ontario. The continuation of this position within the organization is dependent on continued funding through the Government of Ontario.
