Job description

The Translator is responsible for translating and reviewing various documents from English into French by using translation tools judiciously to ensure quality and consistency while meeting deadlines. Content will be directed to both internal and external audiences.

Responsibilities
  • Translate and review documents from English to French across departments including HR, Marketing, and other departments such as emails, letters, intranet posts, internal policies, website content, articles, biographies, pitches, and conference materials. Ensure translations are accurate, contextually appropriate, and tailored to the intended audience.
  • Translate and review legal documents received from lawyers in Montreal and other offices.
  • Liaise with internal requesters to clarify translation needs. Gather missing information, confirm tone and audience, and resolve terminology questions to ensure high-quality and consistent translations.
  • Conduct terminological research to support translation accuracy.
  • Use reliable sources to verify specialized terms and contribute to the firm’s terminological database by creating and updating records.
  • Ensure all translated materials especially Marketing and Business Development content align with the firm’s brand voice, guidelines, and standards.
  • Maintain consistency in tone, style, and messaging across all translated outputs.
  • Maintain and update the firm’s intranet.
  • Regularly review and revise content to ensure it remains current, accessible, and aligned with organizational priorities.
  • Prioritize translation tasks for internal completion or outsourcing.
  • Assess workload and complexity to determine which requests should be handled in-house and which should be assigned to external translation vendors.
  • Respond to terminology questions from external vendors.
  • Provide guidance by consulting requesters or conducting internal research to ensure consistency and clarity in outsourced translations.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of the firm’s internal terminology database, ensuring accuracy and relevance for legal and business contexts.
  • Regularly update entries, ensure accuracy, and support knowledge sharing across departments.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in translation.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience as a full-time English-to-French translator in a structured work environment.
  • Proficiency in MS Office.
  • Solid knowledge of computer-assisted translation tools, in particular Logiterm.
  • Legal training is an asset.
  • Membership in OTTIAQ is an asset.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both French and English.
  • Able to convey complex ideas clearly and professionally in both languages including interacting with stakeholders outside Quebec, ensuring linguistic accuracy and cultural appropriateness in all communications.
  • Results-oriented and self-directed, with excellent prioritization skills.
  • Capable of managing multiple translation requests in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Demonstrates initiative and resourcefulness in handling competing priorities and delivering high-quality work under pressure.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and collaborative mindset.
  • Works effectively both independently and as part of a team. Builds positive relationships with colleagues, requesters, and external vendors to support smooth workflows and consistent terminology usage.

This position is part of our hybrid work model with 4 days in the office per week. As part of our onboarding, new hires are required to be in the office more often for the first few months of employment to ensure they receive the requisite cross training.
