Join the City of Medicine Hat as a Transit Operator/Service Worker

Temporary, On Site

Are you passionate about serving your community and making a positive impact? This dual role combines the responsibilities of both a Transit Operator and a Service Worker. As a Transit Operator, you will safely operate various transit vehicles, ensuring a courteous and respectful experience for passengers and other road users. As a Service Worker, you will perform essential manual tasks, including cleaning and preparing buses, as well as providing temporary backup for Transit Operators.

This is a temporary position, with casual hours, but it's also a unique opportunity to join the City of Medicine Hat team, gain valuable experience, and be part of a supportive workplace that truly makes a difference in the community. While shifts cannot be guaranteed, there are weekly opportunities to pick up additional hours, offering a degree of flexibility. Your Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver high-quality customer service with professionalism and maturity.
  • Operate transit vehicles safely and courteously, adhering to all traffic laws.
  • Help special needs customers with boarding, exiting, and securing mobility devices.
  • Collect fares, validate passes, issue transfers, and enforce related policies.
  • Effectively communicate transit system information to customers.
  • Prepare buses for daily start-up and provide backup to Transit Operators.
  • Address mechanical issues on transit buses and carry out minor repairs.
  • Maintain bus shelters, terminals, and stops, including signage and snow removal.
What you bring
  • A passion for working with the public and helping people reach their destinations safely and efficiently.
  • Proven customer service experience, preferably in a high-interaction or fast-paced environment.
  • The ability to remain calm, composed, and focused under pressure, including during challenging weather conditions or unexpected situations.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and the ability to use independent judgment to make sound decisions, ensuring smooth daily operations.
  • Flexibility and adaptability, as we cannot provide a set schedule or guarantee a specific number of hours. While our current drivers work an average of 30+ hours per week, actual hours may vary based on operational needs. Shifts may include rotating days, evenings, nights, weekends, and short‑notice or call‑in shifts.
  • A willingness to provide at least 5 days per week of on‑call availability.
  • Availability to work shifts within the designated Hours of Operation:
    • Transit Operators: 6:30 am to 11:00 pm
    • Service Workers: 6:00 am to 1:00 am
Qualifications
  • Proof of a High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A valid Alberta Class 2 Driver's License with airbrake endorsement and a clean driving record.
  • Valid Standard First Aid, CPR-C & WHMIS certification is considered an asset.
  • Experience working with persons with disabilities is an asset.
  • Experience in safely operating large vehicles is an asset.
