The City of Edmonton's Traffic Operations team is looking for a Professional Engineer to help shape our transportation network. This is your chance to apply your technical expertise to real-world challenges ensuring our roads, pathways, and crossings work for everyone.

As the Traffic Engineer you will be a key technical expert for the city. You will be responsible for evaluating and analyzing city-wide traffic operational issues for all modes of travel, including active transportation. Using national guidelines and your professional judgment, you’ll make recommendations to improve safety and efficiency. This role involves managing projects and consultants related to traffic operations as well as supporting other City initiatives from a traffic operations perspective. A crucial part of your work will be preparing, maintaining, reviewing, and professionally authenticating technical documents such as pavement marking and signage guidelines, bylaws, and engineering plans in line with APEGA standards.

What will you do
  • Analyze review and determine requests for new traffic control measures including signage, pavement markings, and speed limit changes.
  • Prepare review and professionally authenticate technical guidelines and develop signage and pavement marking plans as per APEGA standards.
  • Conduct comprehensive plan reviews for internal and external projects providing expert traffic operations feedback.
  • Lead and support capital projects including managing the City’s Overhead Sign program and administering consultant contracts.
  • Collaborate with rail companies on safety upgrades, crossing reviews, and whistle cessation projects.
  • Prepare, update, and maintain critical technical documents, standards, and bylaws such as the Traffic Bylaw and Speed Zones Bylaw.
  • Conduct technical studies, prepare reports, and contribute to materials for Council and Committee presentations.
  • Respond to inquiries from the public, internal teams, and Council offices in a timely and professional manner.
  • Conduct site inspections and field observations to inform your analysis.
Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering

Must be a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing and registered with APEGA. Applicants in a different Canadian jurisdiction eligible for Inter‑Provincial Mobility (IPMA) with APEGA may be considered. Registration with APEGA must be obtained prior to commencement of employment.
A minimum of four (4) years of engineering experience in traffic operations, traffic safety, transportation engineering, and/or transportation planning.

Assets
  • Postgraduate engineering courses (Masters or certificate) in traffic operations, traffic safety, transportation engineering, or transportation planning.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD, GeoMedia or other GIS databases.
  • Experience with project management and procurement processes for consultants.
Skills required for success
  • Strong knowledge of Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) guidelines, city standards, and APEGA regulations.
  • Ability to analyze complex technical information, conduct research and make sound, timely decisions based on professional judgment with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong negotiation and presentation abilities.
  • Proven ability to manage projects, including procurement and contract administration, with a collaborative mindset and customer service focus.

Conditions of employment & work environment
  • Up to 1 permanent full‑time position.
  • Hours of work: 36.9 hours per week, Monday – Friday.
  • Salary: $92,106.08 – $115,131.63 (Annually).
  • This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite.
  • This position is eligible for the EDO program (Earned Day Off).
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Drivers permit is a requirement.
