Job description

Reporting to the Track Inspection Supervisor, the Track Inspector is responsible for conducting regulatory and non-regulatory track asset inspections, reporting deficiencies, and assisting Track Department in scoping out Maintenance and Capital activities. The track inspector will be responsible for identifying and communicating any outlying issues directly inhibiting the track infrastructure in meeting customer railway standards. The position will be based out of a central location, with the inspector performing activities throughout Greater Vancouver Area.

Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties
  • Assure the condition of all mainline and yard track assets are inspected within current standards identified within the applicable Track Standards
  • Carries out inspection schedule, assists in the planning of preventative maintenance and repair programs for track assets and equipment to ensure their safe and efficient operation.
  • Assists in the initiation and implementation of appropriate policies and procedures associated with track and structures maintenance and inspection
  • Assists in the evaluation and the efficiency and effectiveness of maintenance crews, where applicable, including adherence to work plans, performance, quality and safety, to ensure that project objectives are achieved.
  • Assist in investigations and diagnoses track failures, where applicable, difficult maintenance problems, and critical safety issues
  • As required, recommends improvement in work methods and techniques to correct maintenance deficiencies.
  • Generate and submit updated inspection reports daily.
  • Read and interpret Track Geometry reports
  • Enforces company policy and local, state and federally mandated regulations.
General/Other Responsibilities and Duties
  • Act as a positive representation of PNR RailWorks within day-to-day operations.
  • Computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Ability to read and comprehend drawings and specifications.
  • Exceptional analytic, planning, problem solving and organizational skills.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and work to deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and work effectively in a team.
  • Provides technical support to track workers

  • Clean driving record and ability to travel as required.
Qualifications
  • High School graduation plus post-secondary training in a related field or equivalent education, training, and experience.
  • Experience using SolidTrack software an asset.
  • Relevant railway and or track maintenance experience.
  • Effective verbal, written and interpersonal, communication and networking skills.
  • Strong client relations, influencing skills and organizational skills.
  • A solid understanding of the Company’s market: products, and technologies.
  • Ability to use common office software such as Word, Excel & Outlook.
  • Must possess the ability to work independently with attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and self motivate with a strong sense of urgency.
  • Valid and clean Driver’s License. Class 3 license an asset.
  • Having previously or currently hold Canadian Railway Operating Rules (CROR) certificate.
  • Having previously or currently hold Track Inspection Guidelines (TIG) certificate.
  • Experience maintaining continuous welded rail (CWR).
  • Experience allowing movements over rail breaks (MORB).
  • Familiar with Transport Canada track safety rules, and other applicable regulations.
  • Knowledge of the methods and procedures required to carry out track maintenance and to perform system-wide inspections.
  • Knowledge of rail rules, regulations, and procedures and regulatory agency guidelines.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequently works outdoors along active railway corridors or construction sites.
  • Works around moving machines, vehicles, equipment
  • Frequently stands, walks, balances, and crouches while negotiating work areas.
  • Sits, reads, writes and uses a keyboard.
  • May lift/carry and push/pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • May climb poles, ladders and large structures.
  • Occasionally works at heights of 20 feet or more above the ground.
  • Exposed to harsh weather conditions including extremely hot and extremely cold weather.
  • Exposed to loud noise.
