Job Description

Position Purpose summary: The Thrift Store Clerk provides customer service to customers, sorts incoming products, and assists the Supervisor in the maintenance of all store operations.

Accountabilities

Customer Service

  • Takes responsibility for the accurate completion of all customer transactions including Visa, Debit, etc.

  • Communicates with customers to provide product and store information.

  • Complete daily cash-out and sales receipt summaries and bank deposit documentation as per Thrift Store policy

  • Contributes to meeting store sales budgets by maintaining customer service standards

  • Contributes to the safety of staff and customers (e.g., snow removal, clear fire exits, no obstacles inside/outside store, cleans spillage and maintains store cleanliness)

Product Handling

  • Receive, sort and price donations based on store policies.

  • Place priced product on floor racks and shelves

  • Remove product from and keep clean donation bin

  • Discard unusable and old product to Thrift Store garbage

  • Rotate floor product as per Thrift Store policy

  • Implements store layout plans to attract customers including window displays and merchandise displays

  • Contributes to the control of inventory by retrieving, sorting, and pricing as per directions

  • Protects the store from inventory shrinkage by close visual monitoring

Volunteers

  • Work with Thrift Store volunteers and provide direction as required by Store Supervisor

Thrift Store Cleaning and Upkeep

  • Assist in daily cleaning duties of the Thrift Store including sorting areas, staff washroom, store product areas (shelves and racks), floors, windows, change rooms and exterior donation receiving areas (store main and rear entrances) and as directed by supervising staff

Working Conditions

  • This is a casual, on call position with no guaranteed hours. Flexibility in schedule will be required.

  • There may be some level of stress involved when working with “high demand” clients and during times when significant amounts of donations are received and require sorting and/or disposal.

Education and Experience Qualifications

Education, Qualifications, Experience and Certifications

  • Grade 12 Education

  • Up to 3 months experience in retail and customer service

  • Ability to perform cash register duties

  • Be conscientious of good customer service; treat customers with respect.

  • Some understanding and knowledge of clothing, fabric and furniture value and usefulness to be able to sort, price and display appropriate donations

The successful incumbent will be required to complete/provide:

  • Valid Police Check

  • Valid First Aid certificate

  • WHMIS

  • The Salvation Army on-line certification for abuse prevention

  • Participate in mandatory yearly training

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $20.54 to $21.01 with a maximum of $21.48.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
