Job summary

Stober Group in Kelowna, BC is seeking a Construction Assistant to help with demolition, site prep, and material handling on commercial tenant improvement projects. You will support trades, move tools and materials, and maintain a clean, safe work site.

You will assist carpenters, electricians, painters, and flooring installers, learn basic carpentry and finishing tasks, and help ensure workmanship meets project standards while adhering to safety policies.

Qualifications

  • Read and interpret basic construction drawings and instructions.
  • Understand site safety practices and follow them on a daily basis.
  • Experience using common hand and power tools is preferred.
  • Previous tenant improvement or renovation experience is an asset.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s licence is required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with demolition, site clean-up, and prep for construction activities.
  • Load, unload, and transport materials, tools, and equipment on site.
  • Set up temporary barriers, signage, and safety equipment.
  • Prepare work areas for drywall, painting, flooring, and finishing trades.
  • Support TI team with general site tasks as required.
  • Support skilled trades and perform basic carpentry, drywall, and finishing tasks.
  • Operate tools safely and assist with fixture/millwork installations.
  • Learn and develop practical construction skills through hands-on work.

Job description

  • Assist with demolition, site clean-up, and preparation for construction activities.
  • Load, unload, and transport construction materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Set up and maintain temporary barriers, signage, and safety equipment.
  • Prepare work areas for drywall, painting, flooring, millwork, and finishing trades.
  • Support the TI team with general site tasks as required.
Construction Assistance
  • Support skilled tradespeople including carpenters, electricians, plumbers, painters, and flooring installers.
  • Perform basic carpentry, framing, drywall patching, painting, and finishing tasks as directed.
  • Assist with the installation of fixtures, millwork, doors, hardware, and other tenant improvement components.
  • Operate hand tools and power tools safely and effectively.
  • Learn and develop practical construction skills through hands‑on experience.
Site Maintenance & Safety
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard‑free construction site.
  • Remove debris and ensure proper disposal of waste materials.
  • Follow all company safety policies and WorkSafeBC regulations.
  • Conduct daily inspections of tools and equipment.
  • Contribute to a positive, professional, and safety‑focused work environment.
  • Receive and verify deliveries.
  • Organize and store materials to prevent damage and maintain productivity.
  • Monitor inventory levels of supplies and notify supervisors when materials require replenishment.
  • Safely move materials and equipment around the job site.
Quality Control
  • Complete assigned tasks to company quality standards.
  • Ensure workmanship meets project specifications and expectations.
  • Assist with deficiency corrections and project close‑out activities.
  • Take pride in maintaining a high standard of workmanship and attention to detail.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous construction or tenant improvement experience is considered an asset.
  • Experience working on commercial, retail, or office renovation projects is preferred.
  • Previous experience using construction hand and power tools is an asset.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's licence and reliable transportation are required.
  • Ability to safely drive an oversized truck, including an F-550 Dump Truck.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs regularly.
  • Ability to stand, walk, kneel, crouch, climb ladders, perform overhead work, and carry out physically demanding labour throughout the workday.
  • Comfortable working indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to safely operate construction equipment and tools.
Required Certifications
  • Valid Class 5 driver's licence – required.
  • Occupational First Aid – asset.
  • WHMIS Certification – asset.

Salary Range: $22.00 – $24.00 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
