Job summary

Rocky View Schools is seeking a Learning Assistant for Banded Peak School in Bragg Creek. The role supports students with diverse learning needs within classroom, school, and community settings, reporting to the Principal.

The temporary position requires an Educational Assistant Certificate or related credential, training in behavior support, and experience working with students with challenging behavior. CPR/First Aid is a plus.

Qualifications

  • Educational Assistant Certificate or related certificate/diploma.
  • Training in preventative/de-escalating behaviour, or willingness to become certified.
  • Minimum one year experience with students with challenging behavior.
  • CPR/First Aid Certification or willingness to become certified.
  • An equivalent combination of Education and Experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Provides assistance to students identified in their individualized plans including those needing personal, medical care, and safety support.
  • Implements strategies from PLP/IPP/BSP/safety/medical plans to meet diverse student needs.
  • Records observations and data on behavioral challenges to support positive strategies.
  • Participates in IPP/SSP planning meetings as requested.
  • Prepares individualized program materials under teacher direction.
  • Promotes student learning and independence.
  • Facilitates interaction among students with special needs and peers.
  • Maintains confidentiality of student and personnel information.
  • Supports routine personal care activities (toileting, movement, hygiene, feeding).
  • Assists in exercise and adaptive physical education and motor skills development.
  • Supports medical needs including transfers, tube feeding, tracheotomy, oxygen, catheterization, medication administration.

The Opportunity

RVS invites applications for a temporary full-time (30 hrs/wk) Learning Assistant position starting immediately to January 15, 2027, at Banded Peak School.

The Learning Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the diverse needs of learners within the classroom,school, and community settings throughout Rocky View Schools (RVS). Reporting to the Principal, theLearning Assistant collaborates with teachers to adapt and implement programs for students withcomplex needs, with a focus on promoting their health, learning, and independence.

Banded PeakSchool, located in the hamlet of Bragg Creek serves students from grades K-8. Information regarding this school may be found at https://bpeak.rockyview.ab.ca/.

Responsibilities Include
  • Provides assistance to students as identified in their individualized plans including those studentswho require additional types of supports such as personal, medical care, and safety needs.
  • Implements and reinforces strategies as directed by the teacher(s) and identified in student Personalized Learning Plan (PLP), Individualized Program Plans (IPP), Behaviour Support Plans (BSP), safety plans, and medical plans, in programming for the diverse needs of students
  • Records observations and other data on behavioral challenges and creates records that can beused to support positive behavior strategies for students
  • Participates in collaborative planning meetings for IPP’s or SSP’s as requested
  • Provides assistance with preparation of individualized program materials under the direction ofthe classroom teacher/student support teacher
  • Actively promotes student learning and independence
  • Facilitates interaction among students with special needs and their peers
  • Respects confidentiality and maintains privacy of information related to students and personnel
  • Supports students with routine personal care activities such as toileting, movement, personalhygiene, eating, drinking, and feeding
  • Assists in exercising, adaptive physical education, range of motion programs and fine and grossmotor skills development as directed by a specialist and monitored by a teacher
  • Supports students’ medical needs as directed, including assisting the student with transfers, tubefeeding and managing tracheotomy needs, oxygen, catheterization, administration of prescriptionmedication, and other routine medical requirements
Education/Experience
  • Educational Assistant Certificate or a certificate/diploma in a related field
  • Training in preventative/de-escalating behaviour, or willingness to become certified
  • Minimum one (1) year experience working with students with challenging behavior and applyingpositive behavior supports is considered and asset
  • CPR/First Aid Certification or willingness to become certified is considered an asset
  • An equivalent combination of Education and Experience may be considered
Knowledge and Skills
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with a variety of complex and sensitive issues professionally and ina timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out the plans and directions of teaching staff to assist students
  • Ability to build and maintain rapport with students and staff
  • Ability to adapt to dynamic situations, while successfully managing a high level of stress
  • Ability to work effectively in collaborative team settings
  • Excellent multi-tasking, prioritization, and problem-solving skills
  • Working knowledge of child development
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and web-based applications
