Key to Selkirk Elementary School’s philosophy is the incorporation of social‑emotional learning, developmentally responsive practice and structured literacy and numeracy programming.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor of Education or equivalent with a specialization in Intensive French, French Immersion, First‑Language French teacher or FSL qualifications;
• Experience teaching at the elementary level;
• Bilingual written and spoken French and English language;
• Experience teaching students performing at wide-ranging levels of achievement and with diverse learning styles;
• Experience teaching Intensive French would be an asset;

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND SUITABILITY

Candidates should have and may be assessed on their:

• Knowledge of effective instructional practices in structured literacy and numeracy, including the ability to apply assessment for learning and student learning;
• Knowledge of and sensitivity towards the culture and aspirations of Yukon First Nations and a culturally diverse student population;
• Strong ability to adapt and modify curriculum to meet a range of learning styles and abilities;
• Ability to use developmentally responsive approaches to develop effective relationships with students;
• Experience in strong classroom management by setting clear routines and fostering a positive, structured learning environment;
• Ability to assess students’ learning and report progress to parents/guardians using Assessment for Learning and outcome‑based grading principles on a competency‑based curricular framework;
• Excellent interpersonal communication and collaborative skills working with parents, staff members, consultants and community agencies;
• Willingness and ability to participate in the total school program;
• An appreciation of the cultural diversity of the Yukon with the ability to incorporate and promote this diversity within the school community.
