Overview
As a military member, surgical techniciens are responsible for providing a sterile environment for surgical procedures both in static (domestic) and operational (mission) settings. They are integral members of the surgical team, offering perioperative care, assisting surgeons and anesthetists, installing orthopedic casts during surgeries, and managing the sterilization and processing of medical instruments and surgical equipment.

Their main responsibilities include:

• Providing a clean and safe environment for patient treatment and assisting surgical teams during procedures
• Maintaining functional equipment, providing on-site training, and supervising operating room setups in the field
• Supporting patient recovery post-anesthesia
• Decontaminating, cleaning, maintaining, and stocking surgical materials and instruments, including sterilization processes
• Using and maintaining medical and resuscitation equipment
• Documenting and updating medical records, reports, and communications
• Managing supplies and inventory of medical and general provisions

Work Environment
Surgical techniciens mainly work in civilian hospitals within military surgical teams. They may also join civilian teams in Canada or be deployed abroad. Typically, they work regular hours from Monday to Friday, but shifts and on-call duties are possible depending on circumstances.

If you choose a career in the Regular Force, you will be posted to your first base after completing the required training. While transfers are possible, relocations are common during your career. Reserve members serve part-time at a designated reserve unit, working evenings and weekends, with the possibility of full-time employment.

Applicants must possess a diploma in auxiliary nursing, a valid practicing license as an IAA issued by a provincial authority, and a certificate of attestation from the professional authority. An IAA surgical certification is an asset.

Training and Subsidized Education

The Canadian Forces will cover tuition fees for recruits enrolled in a recognized college program. Training includes basic military qualification, summer on-the-job training, and full salary benefits including healthcare and paid vacations. Enrolling in this program commits you to serve for a specified period.

Training

The initial phase is the Basic Military Qualification Course at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, which teaches basic skills and common military knowledge. The course is physically demanding to maintain fitness standards.

The training comprises four modules: a two-year practical nursing course, a six to eight-month accredited OR technician course at college, a 1,500-hour on-the-job training program, and a surgical services field course. After completing the basic training, you will undertake a medical instrument reprocessing course and advanced orthopedics training as you advance in rank.
