Job summary

Element Materials Technology is seeking a Technician I for a seasonal role in our Calgary laboratory. The position performs a range of routine and non-routine testing assignments under direct supervision to ensure timely and accurate results while adhering to safety rules and company policies.

The ideal candidate holds a chemistry degree with at least two years of related experience, can work in a team under pressure, and may shift between day and night hours.

Qualifications

  • Diploma/degree in chemistry with at least 2 years experience in similar role.
  • Ability to work in teams under pressure and flexible to work different shifts if required.
  • Knowledge and experience of safe operation of testing equipment and operating it independently.
  • Ability to work alone periodically throughout the work day with supervision.
  • Understand what must be completed each work day and take initiative to complete those tasks properly.
  • Ability to read and understand customer specifications and perform the testing required.
  • Able to set up and perform a variety of tests according to customer specifications under supervision and input of Senior/Principal.

  • Prepare reagents, standard solutions and ensure standardisation of solutions used in the laboratory.
  • Handling and storage of all chemicals per MSDS.
  • Managing calibration of glassware and instruments.
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative laboratory tests and analyses per standard method.
  • Issue reports and receive samples to/from respective entities.
  • Ensure work complies with ISO 17025 requirements.

Job description

Overview

Element has an opportunity for a Technician I to join our rapidly expanding team. This is a seasonal role. As a member of the operations team in one of the various laboratories across Element, the Technician I position performs a variety of routine and non-routine testing assignments within the department assigned and insures timely and accurate test results under direct supervision. The technician positions must be proficient in a number of core business skills including but not limited to compliance to established safety rules, code of conduct, and company policies and procedures.

Pay Range: $20-$26hr DOE

Assignment End Date: 12/31/26

Responsibilities
  • Analysis of water and soil
  • Operation of equipment like ovens, balances and centrifuges
  • Prepare the reagents, standard solution and ensure standardisation of the solution used in the laboratory
  • Handling and storage all chemicals as per the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
  • Managing the calibration of glass wares and the instruments
  • Performance of qualitative and quantitative laboratory tests and analysis of other substances as per standard method
  • Issue reports and receive samples to and from the respective entities
  • Ensure work compliance to ISO 17025 requirements
Skills / Qualifications
  • Have a diploma / degree in chemistry with at least 2 years experience in similar role
  • Have the ability to work in teams under pressure and flexible to work different working hours (night / day) shifts if required or necessary
  • Knowledge and experience of safe operation of testing equipment and operating it independently
  • Possess the ability to work alone periodically throughout the work day with supervision
  • Understand what must be completed each work day and takes the initiative to complete those tasks properly and timely - does not need Senior/Principal Technician or management to explain what the task is.
  • Ability to read and understand customer specifications and perform the testing required
  • Able to develop a proven ability to set up and perform a variety of tests according to customer specifications under the supervision and technical input of Senior/Principal
Physical Demands
  • Frequency of required physical force: Minimum (moderate).
  • Lifting requirements: lifting <50 lbs. often and > 50 lbs. on occasion
  • Ability to stand on feet for long periods of time
  • Ability to lift 50+lbs periodically
