Job summary

Jobtailor is seeking a Technical Writer in Ottawa to prepare and revise naval technical data documents, ensuring accuracy and consistency with system configurations.

The role requires 5+ years in producing and coordinating technical data packages, knowledge of S1000D and National Defence documentation processes, and proficiency with Adobe publishing tools. The candidate will support, translate, and index technical documentation per defence standards.

Qualifications

Minimum of a 2-year technical program related to naval disciplines (mechanical, electrical, electronic, naval architecture, or equivalent).
Minimum 5 years' experience producing, revising, publishing and coordinating technical data package products (manuals, drawings, lists).
Successful completion of the Technical Writer Ontario College Graduate Certificate or equivalent.
Experience in desktop publishing processes and graphics software such as Adobe Suites.
Knowledge of S1000D specification and IETM format.
Experience with Canadian Forces Technical Orders format and adapting OEM publications to Government Adopted Publications.
Knowledge of National Defence Index of Documentation and Equipment Registration Number processes.
Experience in Logistics Support Analysis Record software and XML data manipulation.

Responsibilities

Prepare, author, and revise technical documents to support improvements to the technical data package.
Review the technical data package with engineers to ensure accuracy and consistency across the support solution.
Coordinate verification of the final technical data package and report status.
Analyze Document Change Requests and coordinate Change Packages for technical data updates.
Implement technical data package changes or coordinate with procurement to contract out implementations.
Coordinate development of new technical data in support of engineering changes, bulletins, or problem reports.
Coordinate translation of technical data and arrange Translation Accuracy Checks for translated material.
Support indexing of documentation per National Defence guidelines and Equipment Registration Number processes.
Ensure adherence to standards, procedures, and controls.

Job description

Prepare, author, and/or revise technical documents (CFTO/LSAR/EFT/Misc. Reports) as necessary to support improvements to the technical data package and support solution;
Review products of the technical data package in collaboration with engineers to ensure that the technical data reflects the latest system/equipment configuration of the ships, is complete, accurate and consistent across the support solution;
Coordinate the activities related to the verification of the final technical data package, track progress and report status;
Analyze Document Change Requests and liaise with technical contributors as appropriate to address the request and prepare or coordinate the development of the Change Package to identify the technical data package changes and revisions;
Implement the technical data package changes and revisions or collaborate with procurement personnel to contract out the implementation of the changes and revisions.
Coordinate the development of new technical data in support of engineering changes, technical bulletins, logistics support analysis or problem reports;
Coordinate the translation of the technical data and the acquisition of associated Translation Accuracy Checks for all translated material or of translation waivers if applicable;
Support, coordinate and control the indexing of technical documentation in accordance with National Defence Index of Documentation; the structure of the Equipment Family Tree and the cataloguing of equipment in accordance with the Equipment Registration Number.
Implement Preventive Maintenance procedure changes in the Logistics Support Analysis Records (LSARs) as required to align with Technical Publication updates and Document Change Package requests;
Support the development or revision of the technical data package in-service management plan, B2B processes, procedures and guides;
Ensure standards, procedures / practices and controls are being followed.

Requirements

Possess a minimum of a 2-year technical program related to any naval discipline including mechanical, electrical, electronic (including software), naval architecture, or equivalent;
Possess a minimum of 5 years of demonstrated experience with the production, revision, publishing and/or coordination of technical data package products including technical publications, systems and equipment manuals, technical drawings and associated lists.
Successful completion of the Technical Writer Ontario College Graduate Certificate program or equivalent;
Experience in desktop publishing processes and graphics production software such as Adobe Suites;
Knowledge of S1000D specification and IETM format.
Experience in the Canadian Forces Technical Orders format and the modification of existing OEM Technical Publications into Government Adopted Publications;
Knowledge of the National Defence Index of Documentation and equipment registration number processes;
Experience in Logistics Support Analysis Record software and/or manipulating raw .XML data.
