Job summary

AtkinsRéalis in Mississauga is seeking a Technical Manager to lead instrumentation and control design for a CANDU MONARK project. You will oversee 10–15 I&C engineers, collaborate with engineering peers and procurement, and ensure designs meet safety, quality, and regulatory requirements.

The role requires a Bachelor’s in Electrical/Mechatronics, a PE in Ontario, and 10+ years in I&C for nuclear plants, with travel as needed. Hybrid work culture and growth opportunities are highlighted.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical/mechatronics engineering from an accredited university.
  • Registered Professional Engineer in Ontario.
  • 10+ years of engineering experience in I&C modernization for nuclear plants.
  • 5+ years of experience leading a team.
  • Experience interfacing with multiple engineering disciplines and stakeholders.
  • Experience working within a Nuclear Quality Management System and CSA standards.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee instrumentation and control design activities for a nuclear steam plant.
  • Design interface between NSP and balance of plant (BOP).
  • Ensure the sequence of deliverables supports the engineering design program.
  • Interface with stakeholders to meet performance, safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Remove barriers affecting safety, quality, cost, and schedule performance.
  • Ensure department deliverables meet budget, schedule, quality, and technical requirements.
  • Develop or modify engineering processes to assure engineering quality.
  • Oversee a team of 10–15 I&C engineers and foster a positive work environment.

Overview

The Technical Manager is a member of the Project Management Team (PMT) on the CANDU MONARK Project, responsible for implementation of the instrumentation and controls design program within engineering, inclusive of interfacing with all stakeholders. The Technical Manager will manage one of two I&C groups within the Monark Project and will report functionally to the ECIC Director.

Overview

The Technical Manager is a member of the Project Management Team (PMT) on the CANDU MONARK Project, responsible for implementation of the instrumentation and controls design program within engineering, inclusive of interfacing with all stakeholders. The Technical Manager will manage one of two I&C groups within the Monark Project and will report functionally to the ECIC Director.

Your role
  • Leading and oversight of instrumentation and control design activities related to the completion of fundamental instrumentation and control design for a nuclear steam plant (NSP).
  • Leading the design interface between the NSP and balance of plant (BOP) portions of a nuclear power plant.
  • Ensuring the sequence of engineering deliverables supports the engineering design program.
  • Interfacing with stakeholders, including Engineering peers, Modelling, Procurement, Construction representatives, and prospective equipment and/or system vendors, to ensure system designs meet performance, safety, and regulatory requirements, and that the resulting designs are constructable, operable, and maintainable.
  • Removing barriers that could impact safety, quality, cost, and schedule performance.
  • Ensuring department deliverables are produced in accordance with budget, schedule, quality, and technical requirements.
  • Production and / or modification of engineering processes required for the assurance of engineering quality within the department.
  • The Technical Manager will oversee the work of 10 to 15 Instrumentation & Control engineering staff including fostering a positive team environment where good performance is recognized and celebrated.
About You
  • Bachelor's degree in an appropriate engineering discipline (Electrical, Mechatronics, etc.) from an accredited University and registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario.
  • Minimum of 10 years of pertinent engineering experience with methodologies and processes used for I&C modernization of a nuclear power plant would be an asset.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in Leading team is preferred
  • Experience managing engineering work with significant interfacing requirements involving other engineering teams (Process/Systems, Mechanical, Physics, Safety, Licensing, Civil/Structural, Electrical, Human Factors, and Process Control), Procurement, Quality Assurance, Contracts, and Construction.
  • Experience working within a Nuclear Quality Management System (CSA N286), nuclear quality standards (CSA N299), and Canadian Nuclear Power Plant standards (CSA N290).
  • Experience delivering an overall plant control system design of a power production facility.
  • Experience and capability in regulatory communications in a regulated industry is an asset.
  • Commercial acumen, with experience in procurement, contracts, supply chain, and/or logistics.
  • Station operations and/or station maintenance experience in a plant controls faculty is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of/experience with the IEC and IEEE suites of standards pertaining to Electrical, Instrumentation and Control design, and other applicable standards and nuclear regulatory guides.
  • Proven track record of performance in a multidiscipline, dynamic, project delivery environment.
  • Willing to travel to and potentially work at sites to meet business needs, inclusive of project (construction) site and equipment/component suppliers. (Note: the main work location will be our Mississauga campus, based on a combination of project requirements and employee preference).
