Team Lead, Environment

Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada | Full-time

Position Overview

Reporting to the Head of Health, Safety, Environment, Communities & Training (HSECT) and working a 2 week on and 2 week off schedule at the Ekati mine site, NT, this supervisory position assists and directs the environment personnel in the execution of sampling and monitoring programs and is responsible for the safety of these personnel working at the mine. The Environment Team Leader, Operations also assists in the collection of data for regulatory reporting requirements, works closely with other departments to coordinate operations, oversees environment equipment management at the mine site, and directs response to wildlife activity.

Job Duties / Responsibilities
  • Supervise and oversee site-based Environmental Specialists, contractors, and students, including orientations, development, and training.
  • Develop and maintain site-based work procedures, health and safety procedures, and risk assessments (e.g., Personal Safety Cards, Job Hazard Analysis).
  • Enter incidents into corporate risk and knowledge management system and meet reporting requirements for WSCC.
  • Serve as primary mine-site Environment contact for mine operations (e.g., wildlife incidents, water and waste management, spill reporting).
  • Oversee equipment and materials inventory, ordering, and maintenance.
  • Supervise wildlife activity and direct implementation of site-wide communication.
  • Lead and participate in sampling and monitoring programs in accordance with licences, permits, and agreements (e.g., Surveillance Network Program, Wildlife Effects Monitoring Program, Aquatic Effects Monitoring Program).
  • Assist the Head – HSECT in annual budgeting of equipment.
  • Maintain familiarity with ArcGIS and GPS software (Basecamp, Map Source) for mapping and GPS navigation.
  • Oversee the use of firearms within the Environment Department at the mine site.
Education / Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in an environmental discipline.
  • 7-10 years of direct or related experience, preferable in mining.
  • Two years of supervisory experience.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience working in the mining industry, experience working in northern Canada, and an understanding of the northern regulatory environment.
