Compensation

Teaching Assistant, Course Coordinator and Lab Demonstrator positions are paid according to the qualifications that the employee holds.

• Employees who do NOT hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the undergraduate rate - $22.07 per hour.(Rate effective September 1, 2024)

• Employees who hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the graduate rate - $34.73 per hour.(Rate effective September 1, 2024)

• In cases where additional duties are required as part of a Teaching Assistant’s duties, these hours shall be compensated at the appropriate Teaching Assistant rate.

Duties

The duties and responsibilities of the Teaching Assistant shall be in accordance with Article 22 of the CUPE Local 4207, Unit 1, Collective Agreement. These are made up of scheduled contact time with students and non-classroom time (including preparation of seminar material, student consultation, marking or grading, examination proctoring, attending lectures, holding office hours, and other course administration as may be required.

Qualifications
  • Graduate Degree (Masters or PhD) in a health-related field
  • Graduate course work and thesis in aging/gerontology
  • Knowledge and training in the social political, and economic forces associated with aging
  • Experience and ability to manage and support students with online teaching technologies
  • Strong communication skills – verbal, written, online
  • Previous graduate level TA experience – particularly in reading and writing intensive courses - an asset.
  • Work experience within the health care system &/or a community based organizations that provides supports and services to older adults would be an asset.
