PetroChina Canada is recruiting for a Tax Analyst to join the Finance and Accounting Team in Calgary. Reporting to the Manager of Tax, Treasury and Insurance, the Tax Analyst will support Canadian tax compliance, reporting, planning and audits.

This is a full‑time, in‑office position based in the Calgary Head Office. The role requires attention to detail and ability to work in a dynamic team while completing tasks independently.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field.
  • CPA or tax designation is an asset.
  • 2–5 years of Canadian corporate tax experience, preferably in oil & gas or natural resources.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian federal and provincial income tax principles.
  • Experience with corporate tax compliance, tax provisions, and tax research.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review Canadian corporate income tax returns, schedules, and working papers.
  • Assist with tax instalment calculations and monitor balances and payments.
  • Prepare and file GST, provincial sales tax, and other indirect tax returns.
  • Reconcile tax accounts and resolve discrepancies with GL and tax balances.
  • Assist with income tax provision and tax disclosures.
  • Forecast cash taxes and assess impact of activities on tax position.

PetroChina Canada (PCC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of PetroChina Company Limited which is partially owned by China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), a state‑owned enterprise. CNPC is China’s largest oil company and the world’s third largest oil company, operating 91 energy‑related projects in over 35 countries and regions. PCC has invested billions of dollars in an asset‑rich portfolio of upstream, midstream and downstream operations. In Alberta, this includes our MacKay River and Dover oilsands projects, Duvernay Shale Gas and a 50% interest in the Grand Rapids Pipeline. PetroChina Canada is recruiting for a Tax Analyst to join the Finance and Accounting Team.

Reporting to the Manager of Tax, Treasury and Insurance, the Tax Analyst is responsible for supporting the company’s Canadian tax compliance, tax reporting, tax planning and tax audit activities. This position will work closely with others within the finance team to ensure the company’s tax obligations are accurately calculated, reported, and paid in accordance with Canadian federal and provincial tax legislation. The ideal candidate will be a detail‑oriented person who enjoys working in a dynamic and fast‑paced team environment while being able to complete tasks independently.

This is a full‑time, in‑office position based in the Calgary Head Office.

Accountabilities:

The accountabilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Prepare and review Canadian corporate income tax returns, tax schedules, and supporting working papers for Canadian corporations, partnerships, and other entities.
  • Assist with the preparation of tax instalment calculations and monitor tax balances and payment requirements.
  • Prepare and file GST, provincial sales tax, and other applicable indirect tax returns.
  • Reconcile tax accounts and investigate and resolve discrepancies between tax filings, general ledger accounts, and tax balances.
  • Maintain tax compliance calendars and ensure filings and payment deadlines are met.
  • Analyze the Canadian tax treatment of oil and gas exploration, development, production, processing, and transportation activities.
  • Calculate and maintain tax pools, including Canadian exploration expense (CEE), Canadian development expense (CDE), Canadian oil and gas property expense (COGPE), undepreciated capital cost (UCC), and other resource‑related tax pools.
  • Assist with the tax treatment of capital expenditures, abandonment and reclamation costs, exploration expenditures, and asset acquisitions and dispositions.
  • Assist with the preparation of our annual income tax provision in accordance with applicable accounting standards.
  • Prepare tax account reconciliations and analyze effective tax rate differences.
  • Support the preparation of tax‑related financial statement disclosures.
  • Assist with forecasting cash taxes and assessing the impact of business activities on the company’s tax position.
  • Identify and explain significant variances between forecast, provision, and actual tax amounts.
  • Research Canadian federal and provincial income tax legislation, CRA administrative positions, and relevant case law.
  • Analyze the tax implications of acquisitions, dispositions, restructurings, financing arrangements, and other corporate transactions.
  • Identify tax planning opportunities and potential tax risks associated with operational and commercial activities.
  • Prepare technical tax memoranda and summaries for management and other internal stakeholders.
  • Monitor changes to Canadian tax legislation and assess their potential impact on the company.
  • Support tax audits and information requests from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and provincial tax authorities.
  • Coordinate responses to the Canada Revenue Agency and provincial tax audits and reviews.
  • Maintain accurate tax documentation and supporting records.
  • Assist with identifying and managing tax risks and ensuring appropriate internal controls over tax processes.
  • Support the implementation of tax policies, procedures, and processes.
  • Work with external tax advisors on complex tax matters and compliance requirements.
  • Provide tax guidance on operational and corporate transactions.
  • Assist with tax‑related accounting entries, reconciliations, and reporting.
  • Communicate tax issues and recommendations clearly to non‑tax stakeholders.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related discipline.
  • CPA or tax designation is an asset.
  • 2–5 years of Canadian corporate tax experience, preferably within the oil & gas or natural resources industry.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian federal and provincial income tax principles.
  • Experience with corporate tax compliance, tax provisions, and tax research.
  • Knowledge of GST/HST and other Canadian indirect taxes.
  • Strong Excel skills and experience working with financial and accounting systems; SAP experience is an asset.
