Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Underwriter / Tarificateur(trice) principal(e) based in Canada.

We are looking for an experienced, bilingual Senior Underwriter to assess complex insurance applications and evaluate mortality and morbidity risks across life, disability, and critical illness coverage. In this remote position, you will apply advanced medical, financial, and non-medical underwriting expertise to make sound, consistent risk decisions. You will provide technical guidance to client organizations, helping them navigate challenging cases and maintain high underwriting standards. Working independently within your approval authority, you will balance analytical precision, customer service, and timely case management. You will also contribute to team development, support training initiatives, and collaborate on projects that improve underwriting practices. This opportunity offers a chance to influence technical decisions, strengthen client relationships, and contribute to a collaborative, innovation-focused environment.

Accountabilities
  • Analyze mortality and morbidity risks by reviewing medical, financial, and non-medical evidence submitted with life, disability, and critical illness insurance applications.

  • Determine appropriate underwriting requirements and classify applications according to the relevant risk category, guidelines, and established underwriting principles.

  • Make accurate, consistent, and well-supported underwriting decisions within assigned approval authority and applicable service-level expectations.

  • Provide technical expertise, advice, and support to client organizations on complex underwriting cases and risk assessment questions.

  • Manage challenging situations proactively and maintain productivity, sound judgment, and attention to detail in a high-pressure environment.

  • Work independently within delegated signing authority while recognizing when a case requires additional consultation or escalation.

  • Support departmental leadership by contributing technical insights, assisting with employee training, leading team discussions, and participating in projects.

  • Help resolve complex technical issues and client concerns by developing practical, evidence-based recommendations.

  • Foster a positive team environment through collaboration, knowledge sharing, creative problem-solving, and continuous improvement.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with colleagues, business partners, and key clients.

  • Participate in relevant professional events and industry activities to strengthen relationships and remain informed about underwriting developments.

  • Organize and prioritize workloads effectively to meet deadlines and maintain high-quality service.

Requirements
  • A college diploma, university degree, or equivalent professional experience.

  • At least six years of underwriting experience, including experience assessing non-standard risks and conducting medical and financial underwriting.

  • Demonstrated expertise in evaluating mortality and morbidity risks for insurance applications.

  • Approval authority of up to CAD $3 million for life insurance and CAD $500,000 for critical illness insurance.

  • Experience across multiple lines of business, including life, disability, and critical illness insurance, is an asset.

  • Fluency in both French and English, written and spoken, is required, as the role involves communicating with a predominantly English-speaking clientele based outside Quebec.

  • Strong analytical, logical reasoning, and problem-solving skills, particularly when interpreting complex medical and financial information.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical underwriting decisions clearly and professionally.

  • A strong customer-service mindset and the interpersonal skills needed to collaborate effectively with internal teams and external business partners.

  • Proven ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and make decisions within established authority limits.

  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet service deadlines.

  • Self-motivation, adaptability, creativity, and a willingness to learn new systems and application tools.

  • The ability to contribute positively to team discussions, influence outcomes constructively, and develop practical solutions to complex issues.

  • Candidates must reside in Canada to be eligible for this remote position.

Benefits
  • Annual base salary: CAD $87,500–$109,400, depending on relevant knowledge, skills, experience, and market location.

  • Annual bonus plan: Eligibility for an annual bonus program.

  • Long-term incentives: Certain positions may qualify for participation in a long-term equity incentive plan.

  • Health benefits: Access to a comprehensive range of health benefits.

  • Retirement benefits: Retirement plans and related benefits.

  • Additional employee benefits: A broader benefits package is available, with specific coverage and eligibility to be confirmed during recruitment.

  • Remote work: Work remotely from within Canada.

  • International collaboration: Opportunities to learn from colleagues and professionals across different regions and backgrounds.

  • Professional growth: Access to knowledge sharing, training, project participation, and opportunities to develop technical expertise.

  • Inclusive work environment: A respectful and collaborative culture that encourages individuality, innovation, and new ideas.
