Job summary

Canucks Autism Network (CAN) is seeking enthusiastic Swim Coaches for the Kamloops YMCA programs. You will lead skill development, implement CAN curriculum, and foster a positive, supportive learning environment for participants on the autism spectrum.

You will work under Onsite Supervisors, mentor volunteers, and receive in-house training with small class sizes. The role requires CPR-C and Standard First Aid, and Lifesaving certifications as listed.

Qualifications

  • Must be 16 years or older.
  • Minimum 1 year experience coaching children/youth sport(s) or leading group activities.
  • Must be comfortable in all depths of the pool.
  • Must hold CPR-C and Standard First Aid Certification.
  • Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor Certification OR Red Cross WSI and Lifesaving Society Swim Transition Course.
  • CPR-C and Standard First Aid Certification.
  • Lifesaving Society NLS Pool Option is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Lead skill development of participants and implement CAN program curriculum.
  • Create a positive and fun learning environment.
  • Provide guidance to Support Workers and Volunteers during program time.
  • Receive in-house training, mentorship and ongoing support.
  • Ensure sessions start and end on time and procedures are followed.

Job description

Wage:$27/hour + 10% in lieu of benefits

Fall 2026 Available Program:

  • Swim @ Kamloops YMCA: Sundays, October 18 to December 6, from 3:45 - 6:30 pm

  • Swim @ Kamloops YMCA: Tuesdays, October 13 to December 1, from 3:45 - 6:00 pm

Program opportunities are available year-round, and we recruit for each season closer to the start of the program. Specific program details will be provided during the recruitment process.

Position Description

Canucks Autism Network (CAN) programs give children on the autism spectrum a place to learn sports skills, engage in new activities, and socialize with their peers without the fear of acceptance or the worry of competition. It is a chance for them to build new friendships, confidence, and their skillset. CAN provides a fun and engaging environment where the pace of instruction can be modified to meet our participant’s individual needs. A high instructor-to-participant ratio allows for individualized support and instruction for each participant, and a variety of strategies are used to help participants to be successful, including visual supports. Training is provided to all CAN Coaches, both in a virtual classroom and on the job.

CAN is looking for enthusiastic and dedicated Swim Coach to join our team. As a Coach you will lead the skill development of participants, implement CAN program curriculum, and create a positive and fun learning environment. Under the direction of our skilled Onsite Supervisors, Coaches are also responsible for providing guidance and leadership to the Support Workers and Volunteers assisting participants during program time. All Coaches receive in-house training, ongoing mentorship and training, and benefit from small class sizes.

Key Functions
  • In collaboration with the Onsite Supervisor, ensure participant-staff pairings remain successful throughout the session
  • Create lesson plans for each session using the equipment and curriculum guidelines, provided by the Program Coordinator
  • Email lesson and activity plans out to staff and volunteers in advance when necessary
  • Provide instruction using best practices for coaching individuals on the autism spectrum including the use of visuals, demonstrations, and clear, simple language as outlined in CAN training
  • Ensure each session starts and ends on time, with appropriate time allotted for each set-up, clean-up and each activity
  • Collaborate with Onsite Supervisor on providing feedback and direction to Support Workers and Volunteers to ensure each activity runs smoothly, including ensuring participant-staff pairings remain successful and assigning tasks to volunteers to ensure they are utilized effectively within the program
  • Pick up equipment from designated location at the assigned time prior to season starting
  • Bring equipment to and from program on a weekly basis
  • Drop off equipment at designation location during assigned time after the session
  • Ensure Volunteers are effectively utilized in collaboration with the Onsite Supervisor
  • Under the direction of the Onsite Supervisor, support the health, safety, and overall well-being of participants by maintaining a safe and hygienic environment, assisting with participant toileting and personal care needs in a respectful and dignified manner
  • Swim Coaches: Assess swimming skills and write report cards for participants
Job Requirements
  • Must be a minimum age of 16 years or older
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in coaching children/youth sport(s) and/or leading and planning group activities in a recreational setting
  • Must feel comfortable in all depths of the pool
  • Must have valid: CPR-C and Standard First Aid Certification
  • Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor Certification OR Red Cross WSI and Lifesaving Society Swim Transition Course
  • CPR-C and Standard First Aid Certification
  • Lifesaving Society NLS Pool Option (not required but an asset)
  • Punctual and reliable:committed to 100% program attendance
  • Autism experience and knowledge an asset
  • Able to provide appropriate references and a clear criminal record check
  • Fun, enthusiastic, motivated and a positive team player
