Job summary

Ciena Corporation is seeking a Software Test Engineer to validate Waveserver software and hardware. You will design test plans, execute cases, and contribute to automation, working with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality networking products.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Telecommunications, or related field.
• 0–2 years of relevant experience (internships, co-op terms, academic research, or projects).
• Understanding of testing concepts including functional, regression, integration, and system testing.
• Basic knowledge of networking fundamentals and network management concepts.
• Exposure to AI-enabled engineering tools such as GitHub Copilot or similar technologies to support software development, automation, data analysis, and problem-solving activities.
• Familiarity with Linux environments and command-line tools.
• Exposure to Python or other programming languages.

Responsibilities

• Validate feature, integration, regression, and system-level validation activities for Waveserver software and hardware releases.
• Develop, maintain, and execute test plans and test cases covering different service workflows.
• Validate northbound interfaces including CLI, REST, NETCONF, gNMI/gRPC, OpenConfig, SNMP, and WebSocket management interfaces.
• Perform verification of streaming telemetry, data collection, performance monitoring, and operational state reporting across supported interfaces.
• Investigate software defects by analyzing logs, alarms, telemetry data, and system behavior, and collaborate with development teams to drive root-cause resolution.
• Contribute to test automation initiatives using Python-based frameworks, Jupyter notebooks, and other software tools to improve test coverage and execution efficiency.
• Collaborate with Development, Systems Engineering, and Technical Support teams to support high-quality product releases and customer satisfaction.

How you will make an impact

The must haves

• Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Telecommunications, or a related field.
• Experience: 0-2 years of relevant experience (including internships, co-op terms, academic research, or projects).
• Understanding of testing concepts including functional, regression, integration, and system testing.
• Basic knowledge of networking fundamentals and network management concepts.
• Exposure to AI-enabled engineering tools such as GitHub Copilot or similar technologies to support software development, automation, data analysis, and problem-solving activities.

Nice to haves

• Knowledge of optical networking, DWDM, coherent optics, Layer 0/1 transport technologies, or telecommunications systems.
• Exposure to network telemetry, performance monitoring, streaming data, or network analytics concepts.
• Experience with automation frameworks, CI/CD workflows, Git, Jenkins, Robot Framework, PyTest, or similar tools.
• Familiarity with YANG models, OpenConfig, SNMP, or network management systems.
• Experience working with test equipment, lab environments, or hardware/software integration testing.
• Understanding of troubleshooting methodologies and defect lifecycle management.
• Interest in networking, telecommunications, cloud infrastructure, automation, and software quality engineering.

Pay Range

The annual pay range for this position is $62,700 - $100,100 Pay ranges at Ciena are designed to accommodate variations in knowledge, skills, experience, market conditions, and locations, reflecting our diverse products, industries, and lines of business. Please note that the pay range information provided in this posting pertains specifically to the primary location, which is the top location listed in case multiple locations are available. Non-Sales employees may be eligible for a discretionary incentive bonus, while Sales employees may be eligible for a sales commission.
