Description

The Surgical Services Department at Lake of the Woods District Hospital (LWDH) has an opening for a Registered Nurse (RN), where you will play a vital role in the Operating Room (OR) and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU).

In this multifaceted role, you will provide care to patients undergoing both emergency and elective surgical procedures, contributing to a diverse and engaging clinical experience. LWDH partners with visiting specialists who offer a broad range of surgical services (Orthopedics, General Surgery, Urology, Gynecology, Cataracts, Dental, and Endoscopy), resulting in an exciting and fast-paced team environment. As a member of the Surgical Services team, you will be started in the department working in PACU which entails conducting pre-operative assessments/interventions and delivering compassionate post-operative care to support best recovery outcomes.

If not already perioperatively certified, you will be expected to complete an online certified perioperative course which also consists of clinical labs followed by a set orientation to the operating room and its procedures. The course is completed during working hours. This is a unique opportunity to build advanced clinical skills and provide meaningful patient-centered care.

Once fully trained, you will also take part in the department’s on-call rotation which is offered after hours, 7 days/week. There are 2 staff assigned call each day and an On-Call schedule is posted. Shifts are Monday – Friday and currently there are two (2) shifts [0700 – 1500 hrs and 0830 – 1630 hrs]. Staff are rotated between the operating rooms and PACU.

Qualifications
  • Current registration with College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Minimum of two (2) years clinical Med‑Surg experience OR related experience
  • Current Certification in BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • Current Certification in ACLS and ECG Rhythm Interpretation required
  • PALS and PEARS certification required
  • CPI certification required
  • Certification in IV Therapy with proven ongoing competence
  • Completed a certified perioperative program
  • Certification in perioperative nursing [CPN(C)] preferred
  • Willing to commit to 6 months of full-time training
  • Ability to function independently
  • Ability to function as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to meet physical and mental requirements in a stressful environment
  • Demonstrate knowledge/experience in teaching patients
  • Ability to perform assessments of unconscious post-operative patients and manage pain
  • Knowledge and experience of First Nations culture an asset
  • Able and willing to participate on on-call schedule and respond to calls within 30 minutes
  • Reliable attendance record
