Job Summary

In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. The Surgical Daycare Nurse provides nursing care to patients within the Gynecology Surgical Services Program. As part of the role, the nurse works as a member of the Surgery Program’s multi-disciplinary team and provides nursing activities such as patient assessment, teaching, and support for gynecology procedures and health promotion activities consistent with established policies. This role also participates with other members of the team in program development by providing feedback as required.

Duties/Accountabilities
  1. As a member of the team, provides patient care through the provision of education and support to patients in the Program around issues related to their procedure and/or treatment. Works collaboratively with medical staff and other multi-disciplinary health care team members to assist in ensuring effective, evidence-based and high-quality patient-centred care.
  2. Provides direct and indirect nursing support and care for patients including: preparation of patient for gynecology procedures, medication administration, set-up and operation of patient monitoring equipment, and managing recovering patients after procedural sedation and phase II recovery after general anesthesia.
  3. In collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, participates in streamlining and provides input into surgical slates to ensure patients are cared for in a safe and efficient manner. This process includes reviewing patient history noting allergies, risk factors, and medications etc.
  4. Maintains related records including hand written and computerized documents such as patient records, data sheets and procedural forms.
  5. In collaboration with the Program Manager, participates in program and/or policy development by providing feedback on nursing policies as requested. Participates in and may lead daily workflow sessions.
  6. Provides input to the Program Manager or delegate, regarding policies, procedures and operational requirements by observing service needs and providing spoken or written suggestions which address patient and family needs and promote effective use of resources.
  7. Participates in the emergency preparedness by checking the crash cart, participating in mock codes and emergency codes, and responding to other emergency situations as required.
  8. Participates in Quality Assurance activities for the program including; chart audits, compiling statistics as required, and participation in educational rounds and simulation sessions on emergency scenarios.
  9. Maintains and updates current nursing knowledge and competencies by reviewing literature, attending Rounds, consulting with other professionals and attending other approved relevant educational programs in order to contribute to the continuing improvement of health care within the Surgical Services Program.
  10. Participates in the orientation and continuing education of medical residents, nursing and other allied health care students.
  11. Maintains a safe environment for patients, families and staff by following standards, established procedures, policies and guidelines.
  12. Participates in values clarification process, and other professional health promotion programs offered through Women’s Hospital and Health Centre in general, upon request.
  13. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education, Training & Experience:

  • Graduate from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Two (2) years of recent related medical/surgical nursing experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Ability to demonstrate effective CPR techniques.
