Job summary

A local educational services provider in Powell River seeks a part-time SCD Worker to assist in licensed preschool and community programs. Applicants must have a Diploma in Early Childhood Education, experience with children/youth with extra support needs, and a Class 5 driver’s license. Responsibilities include providing hands-on support, working collaboratively with families, and promoting inclusive practices. Salary ranges from $25.95 to $29.76 per hour.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 6 months’ recent experience working with children/youth with extra support needs.
  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license is necessary.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check and TB Test required.

Required Abilities

  • Works as a team member in settings where children/youth participate to plan and implement strategies and activities for inclusion. Encourages and provides modeling/mentorship for staff/operators to promote successful involvement and interaction of children/youth with their peers
  • Works as a team member to plan and implement daily activities and experiences to meet goals and objectives. Daily experiences are culturally appropriate and enhance the development of all children in the setting
  • Participates in on-going evaluations of plans, goals and objectives. Participates in team meetings, completes observations, assessments, and contributes to the development of the Service Plan
  • Maintains records, documentation and reporting which is objective, complete, timely and in keeping with inclusion powell river standards
  • Responds immediately to emergencies including incidents of child abuse, in accordance with funder guidelines, inclusion powell river policies and procedures using common sense and good judgement at all times
  • Maintains an up-to-date knowledge in the field, participates actively in the evaluation process and in training opportunities. Contributes to a learning organization by self-reflecting on their practice, sharing ideas and contributing to planning and discussions about service. Seeks input and support when concerns or questions arise
  • Adheres to inclusion powell river policies and procedures. Understands the service principles, the Community Care Licensing Regulations, CARF standards, ministry guidelines and ensures that all of these form the basis for all work performed. Ensures Certificate to Practice as an Early Childhood Educator in BC is maintained

Qualifications

  • Diploma and current certification in Early Childhood Education
  • Special Needs and Infant Toddler certification is an asset
  • Minimum 6 months’ recent experience working with children/youth with extra support needs
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Class 5 driver’s license

Requirements for hiring and ongoing Employment

  • A valid WCB-approved First Aid Certificate (OFA Level 1)
  • A valid WCB-approved Child Safe First Aid Certificate
  • Class 5 driver’s license
List of Duties
  • The SCD Worker makes a significant contribution to children and families by providing effective hands‑on support and assistance in licensed preschool, child care and community programs.
  • Staff promote a culturally safe, trauma informed, family centred approach to service.
  • They plan and carry out individualized support which foster inclusion both at home and within the care setting.
  • The SCD Worker assists parents and caregivers to learn helpful strategies to understand and meet the needs of their child.
  • They work with centre operators to support the goals of each child/youth on caseload and develop inclusive practices.
  • The SCD worker reports to the SCD program consultant.
