Under the general direction of leadership the Supervisor, Transit Operations is a first level leadership position with a focus on safety and oversight of transit services and provides direct oversight of Transit Operators, Hostlers, Shelter Maintenance Labourers, and Shelter Maintenance Technicians. This role is also responsible for providing customer service to the public, responding to all incidents, and carrying out other duties as required in the provision of transit service.
Oversees transit operations during shift, which includes verifying processes and procedures are consistently applied and that equipment and employee requirements are fulfilled. Ensures personnel are trained, certified, competent, and fit for duty on an ongoing basis. Leads, mentors, coordinates, and directs daily activities of Transit personnel, bringing any appropriate employment matters to the attention of the Assistant Manager, Transit Operations/Assistant Manager, Transit Planning, and/or delegate. Communicates information, processes, and requirements to Transit personnel in the field in person, over the phone, radio or via other transit technologies. Responsible for developing and ensuring the delivery of toolbox talks and safety meetings.
Coordinates and monitors the delivery of all transit operations to ensure services are provided in a safe, efficient, and timely manner. Manages daily service changes on the road and responds to transportation requests, issues, and concerns. Responds to all incidents immediately and conducts incident investigations as required. Collects data and prepares daily summaries on all activities and escalates concerning operator and service-related complaints and compliments. Responds to requests for assistance on service matters, passenger concerns, operator assistance, equipment breakdowns, traffic situations, special events, and other related issues. Performs routine foot patrols at terminals and other facilities. Responsible for scheduling Transit Operators in accordance with collective bargaining provisions. Maintains daily dispatch log and statistical information. Ensures documentation is updated and accurate. Monitors and evaluates traffic problems, authorizes/assists with route changes and notifies drivers in cases of inclement weather, unsafe operation conditions, road construction, or other unique situations affecting delivery of services. Maintains the daily dispatch log and statistical information such as advance bookings, subscription bookings, cancellations, and no shows. Conducts route testing and assessments as needed. Uses a variety of transit technologies to monitor route and employee performance.
Ensures compliance with rules, regulations, collective agreement, policies, and procedures. Ensures timely and accurate completion of reports and ensures compliance with federal, provincial, and municipal regulations. Accurately records all relevant service-related impacts including but not limited to passenger counts, public information, service frequencies, changing travel patterns and demands, routing recommendations, service levels, placement of shelters, stops and signs for service planning and improvements. Matters such as employment, performance management, and disciplinary action will be facilitated in consultation with the Assistant Manager, Transit Operations/Assistant Manager, Transit Planning, and/or delegate. Coordinates with emergency services when required and responds to emergency activations from the Regional Emergency Coordination Centre.
As an employee of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, the incumbent is responsible and accountable for knowing and working in accordance with the Health and Safety Directive. As per Section 2 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the incumbent shall ensure, while in the employ of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, the health and safety of employees, contractors, and the public.
This position is employed in a supervisory capacity. As such, the employee is required to obtain additional safety training in accordance with municipal procedures and directives.
