Job Overview

Supervisor, Disability Management is a working supervisor responsible for leading the coordination and delivery of disability and claims management programming at the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. This role fosters collaboration among stakeholders, focusing on supportive and solution‑based approaches. Responsibilities include overseeing end‑to‑end disability case management (STD, LTD, WCB, medical leaves), ensuring timely resolution, supporting work‑related injury reporting, and leading the Return‑to‑Work process.

Responsibilities
  • Employee Development: Perform supervisory tasks, plan and balance workload, conduct portfolio reviews, coordinate services with external providers, support program review and process changes, provide recommendations on claim actions.
  • Service Delivery: Identify, prioritize, and coordinate disability claims, resolve inquiries, lead modified duty and RTW programs, interpret legislation, collaborate across departments to improve reporting, analyze data and present reports.
  • Departmental Guidance: Communicate regulations and best practices, guide staff and leadership, implement preventive measures, maintain stakeholder relationships, resolve program conflicts, support continuous improvement, and provide stakeholder feedback.

  • Interpret and apply relevant legislation (OHS, WCB, Human Rights) and third‑party provider requirements.
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with leaders, direct reports, and external contacts.
  • Excellent interpersonal and business‑perspective assessment skills.
  • Strong leadership with accountability, service delivery, collaboration and understanding of system impacts.
  • Problem‑solving, risk prioritization, and complex situation de‑escalation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, clarity, concision, and supportiveness.
  • Provide clarification on claims management processes.
  • Self‑starter capable of working in a fast‑paced environment with minimal supervision.
  • Strong foundation in workplace accommodation principles and interpreting medical recommendations for RTW solutions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Education
  • Degree in Health Science, Business Administration, Human Resources, or related field.
  • Certificate in Claims Management, Disability Management, or Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Preferred CDMP or CRTWC certification or equivalent.
  • Equivalent experience and education may be considered.
Experience
  • Five (5) years progressive experience in health claims or disability management.
  • Three (3) years experience in a supervisory/leadership role.
  • Experience in a public sector environment with unionized/non‑unionized employees is an asset.
Other Requirements
  • Submission of a Criminal Record Check.
  • Valid Class 5 Operator’s License (personal/municipal vehicle use).
  • Travel to various work locations within the region may be required.
Safety

The incumbent must follow the Health and Safety Directive and obtain required safety training. The role is supervisory and requires additional safety training in accordance with municipal procedures and directives.
